A Moth in Disguise

I wanted to write this article for a while but as always, procrastination got the better of me. Anyway, here’s what I think about a very fascinating paper I’ve read few months ago. The paper is named “The Entropic Brain: a theory of conscious states informed by neuroimaging research with psychedelic drugs”, published by Robin […]

Courage, Dear Heart

I’m a daydreamer. I’ve always loved that about myself. I love that I can create worlds and stories in my mind, that I can imagine and relive some of the best moments of my life. I love that I can see endless possibilities in one person or piece of art. Recently, though, I’ve realized that […]

“Have I ever done anything outside my comfort zone?” is a question we should constantly ask ourselves. Often times, adventure is often synonymous to exotic dishes, white beaches, and trips to faraway places. We are quick to discard going on adventures because of the monetary demands we feel it may place on us. Or worse, […]

Summer has a reputation for being the most relaxing time of year. School’s out, vacations begin, and you basically shut off your brain for a few months. Even when you are working, you’re daydreaming of being on a beach. Probably. It’s chill, sure, but it’s definitely not the most productive season. Turns out there’s another […]

TELEVISION REVIEW “REEF BREAK” Series premiere Thursday at 10 p.m. on ABC. Grade: B- ABC’s “Reef Break” is everything that CBS’ “Hawaii Five-0” should be — breezy, bright, a wee bit sassy, a whole lot silly, the ideal summer show to catch as a nightcap before bed. Poppy Montgomery (“Without a Trace,” “Unforgettable”) stars as Cat Chambers, a surfer by day, a onetime thief (though never convicted, she likes to remind people), who returns after five years of wandering the globe to her home, the small but gorgeous Pacific island known as the Reef. Scratch paradise and you uncover a hotbed of crime. But Cat has a keen eye for spotting misbehavior and miscreants that other people miss, such as the nervous robber who departs her flight with a bag full of cash. She helps foil his escape but isn’t above helping herself to some of his loot — a finder’s fee, if you will. Cat seems to have led several lives, and a few of her secrets slowly start to be teased — tho’ not precisely revealed. She has a complicated relationship with her ex, Jake (Ray Stevenson, “Rome”), a onetime FBI agent who was injured in the line of duty. And she hasn’t been back on the island for maybe an hour and she’s already tumbling into the sack with naive Detective Wyatt Cole (Desmond Chiam, last seen being abused by aliens on Starz’s bizarre “Now Apocalypse”). Cat doesn’t take kindly to anyone crowding her waves. One young surfer, Petra (Tamala Shelton), welcomes her with a punch to the face. There’s some bad history here. Amid all this, the daughter of the richest man on the island is snatched right out of her kayak. The kidnappers demand the rather oddly precise figure of $6 million as ransom (why not $5 million? Or $10 million?) and expect Cat to deliver it to them. “Are you crazy?” someone demands after Cat does something, again, incredibly risky. “The theory has been floated to me once or twice,” she replies as the world explodes behind them. If you have at least two working brain cells, and you do, dear reader, you’ll be able to guess all the twists in this crime story. Two baddies are even killed offscreen, off-scene. A word about Reef police station. It’s a sleek open space with big windows and great views, and it’s pretty much all in searing pastel blue, and there’s even a foosball table. It’s the Big Boy version of the Hasbro police station you’d give to your toddler. By episode’s end, Cat decides to remain on the island, on the beach, where she will no doubt continue to solve crimes, on her own terms. “I’m a slave to my conscience — such as it is,” she says. Montgomery, who serves as executive producer of the series, is a native Australian and the series was filmed on location on the Gold Coast in Queensland. It’s absolutely stunning. At the very least, “Reef Break” will leave you daydreaming about booking your own trip down under.
