Today Is The Question: Ted Panken on Music, Politics and the Arts

Just received news that master vibraphonist and tuned percussion player David Samuels has passed away at age 70. In his memory, I’m posting a Blindfold Test that he did with me in 1998 — I think this was my first-ever BFT. ************* David Samuels Blindfold Test (1998): Veteran mallet master David Samuels has touched on […]

STANDARD Bluetooth speakers are great if you want to take your music with you everywhere, but they often lack the bass-y punch or crystal clear vocals you get from buying one of the best multi-room speakers. You want to get a sound system that looks stylish enough to take pride of place in your home, offers room-filling sound and can stream tracks from your favourite services. It also needs to be easy-to-setup and capable of working as a standalone speaker, as well as part of a network. Such features don’t, and shouldn’t, come cheap, but true audiophiles will see buying such models a worthwhile investment. We’ve combined our own expert opinion with online customer reviews and ratings to reveal the best multi-room speakers to buy in 2019. Where a brand offers a range of speaker sizes and prices, we’ve selected our favourite but have also highlighted cheaper, smaller – or even larger – models to help you choose the right network and setup for you and your home. The best multi-room speaker Sonos Play:5, £499 from Sonos – buy here Sonos pioneered truly wireless, multi-room speakers and it still offers some of the best audio and features around. Its flagship speaker is the Play:5 and it delivers clear, crisp sound. This is thanks to six class-D amplifiers, and six speaker drivers, which play your music as it was meant to be heard, highlighting even the tiniest of details. Three woofers then deliver the bass. It’s not the smallest of speakers, but it can be placed vertically and horizontally without the sound quality being affected. Touch controls on the top (or side, if you’re displaying it vertically) can be used to increase the volume or skips tracks, or you can control the Play:5 using the Sonos app, or via your voice by connecting it to an Amazon Echo or Echo Dot. The app lets you select which speaker, in which room, you want to stream music to, as well as tweak settings and queue up songs. If £499 is a little steep, the Play:1 or Sonos One are smaller, cheaper equivalents. You can also pair any of these speakers with Sonos’ great range of soundbars, and it sells amps and subs, as well as in-wall and in-ceiling speakers as part of the range, to wire your entire house for excellent sound. Best for parties Denon HEOS 7, £449 from Amazon – buy here Denon’s HEOS system has something for every music fan and every home, office or venue ranging from its compact HEOS 1, perfect for smaller spaces, the HEOS 3, which is better suited to small to medium rooms up to The HEOS 5, for medium and large spaces, and its flagship HEOS 7 – the best of the bunch. The HEOS 7 delivers well-rounded, clear sound via its two custom tweeters, two mid-woofers, large subwoofer and two passive radiators powered by five class-D amplifiers. The audio quality, especially the richness of sound and the power of the bass, improves as you move up the line, making the HEOS 7 a perfect speaker for parties. All the HEOS speakers can be linked via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and, once connected to a Wi-Fi network, they can be controlled using your voice thanks to support for Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. The larger models, including the HEOS 7, do have a router-style design to them but that’s if we’re nitpicking. This is a decent range that offers a lot of choice at a slightly cheaper plus point than the Sonos. The best multi-room speaker Naim Mu-so, £849 from John Lewis – buy here For almost double the price of the Sonos and Denon – but with a host of features and superb sound quality to justify this increase – is Naim’s Mu-So speaker. It has a somewhat industrial design, being made from anodised aluminium, but don’t let this put you off. The sound you get from this machine, whether it’s clear vocals, or sucker-punch bass is unrivalled at this price point. This is thanks to six digital amplifiers, a porting system that has been specifically designed to move large volumes of air to create serious levels of bass, as well as two EQ settings that let you tailor sound to your preferred listening style and room size. Its USB port means you can connect other speakers and devices to the Mu-so for a wired multi-room set-up, or you can use AirPlay, and the Naim app, to stream wirelessly over Wi-Fi to multiple Mu-so speakers, or the smaller, cheaper Mu-so QB.   The best multi-room speaker for style and substance Ruark R7 Mk3, £2,300 from John Lewis – buy here If the Naim Mu-so’s design is a little too minimalistic or space-age for your liking, Ruark’s range of multi-room speakers combine A-grade sound with a much more traditional and stylish aesthetic. Our favourite is the Ruark R7 Mk3. Not only does it look fantastic, it produces a level and quality of sound you’d expect in a professional studio. Two dual drive units, an active subwoofer and driver, a linear class A-B amplifier and enhanced sound processing showcases the full range of your music, picking out instruments you may never have heard on your favourite tracks. This is boosted further by adjustable treble and bass settings. It offers the most listening options of any multi-room speaker in this list from a built-in CD player, and DAB radio to Bluetooth and wireless streaming features, letting you beam audio from your phone, tablet or even PC. And, when you want to take your audio with you as you move around the house, every source and input on R7 can be multi-roomed through cables or via the Ruark LINK app. If the Ruark R7 Mk3 is too pricey, or too large, its R2 Mk3 offers similar radio, Spotify, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi features for a more affordable £419. The best multi-room speaker on a budget Amazon Echo, £89.99 from Amazon – buy here Seeing as many of the speakers in this list support Amazon Alexa’s voice controls, it would be remiss not to include the Amazon Echo itself in our selection of the best multi-room speakers. It doesn’t offer quite the level of sound quality seen on its rivals but the second-gen model does come with a downward-firing woofer and tweeter powered by Dolby, delivering decent vocals and dynamic bass. You won’t be buying the Amazon Echo for sound quality alone, though. It’s incredibly easy to set up via the Alexa app, is cheap – starting at just £89.99 (or £49.99 for the smaller Echo Dot) – and has a whole host of smart features that we’d happily pay more for. The Amazon Echo range of smart speakers may be an entry-level way to get multi-room audio, but that only adds to its appeal.   [article-rail-topic title=”MORE FROM SUN SELECTS TECH” term_id=”14241″ posts_number=”6″ /] Sun Selects exists to help you find the best products at the best prices, whether for home, garden or a special event.
