Metro
What will people be getting nostalgic over in 20 years’ time? The morning Inbox tries to explain the success of loot boxes, as one reader admits they may have played too much Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@ukmetro.co.uk   [metro-fact-box title=”Time capsule” colour=”grey” icon=”no-icon”] So here’s a little thought experiment for you. We’ve seen lots of Classic Mini style consoles lately, with the Mega Drive one being the latest, but imagine the far future and what games would there be on one for the PlayStation 4? (Or Xbox One, but I only have a PlayStation 4 so I can’t speak to that personally.) Ignoring for a moment the hash Sony made of the PlayStation Classic their classics alone make a pretty intimating line-up: God Of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Uncharted 4, Bloodborne… Sony has had a great generation. And then you’d have the top multiformat games like, GTA V and Red Dead Redemption II, The Witcher 3, Overwatch, Call Of Duty and Battlefield reps… I think it’s been an excellent generation all round really and more importantly I think that in 20 years, when this would presumably happen, these games will still be as playable as ever. It seems hard to imagine what gaming would be like in 20 years, but PS1 games are that old and they’re still being remade on current formats today. Perhaps everything will be VR in the future, but I’ve got a feeling that nostalgia will survive just as well. Jorah [/metro-fact-box]   [metro-fact-box title=”Late night entertainment” colour=”grey” icon=”no-icon”] I see Square Enix has announced their E3 press conference, taking the spot of Sony at stupid o’ clock on Monday night/morning. Last year’s conference was a wash, but I’m not sure that was ever really intended as proper one so I’m hoping that this year’s will be better. Definitely looking forward to PlatinumGames’ Babylon Fall and hoping that at long last we’ll get a reveal of The Avengers game. Those seem the two most obvious things and then maybe more on Final Fantasy VII remake? I can’t remember if it was even mentioned last year, but it seems an eternity since we got any real information. The maybe Octopath Traveler 2 or something else exclusive for the Switch? And something from their Western studios… maybe a Deus Ex reboot or a hit at more Tomb Raider? Some surprises would be nice and hopefully no more time (or more importantly budget) wasting with stuff no one cares about like Just Cause. Still no idea what they were thinking of with that last one. Kubo [/metro-fact-box]   [metro-fact-box title=”News Blackout” colour=”grey” icon=”no-icon”] With all the talk of leaks lately I see that for once there hasn’t been anything for this year’s Call Of Duty, even though most people seem to assume it’s going to be Modern Warfare 4. We must be getting very close to an official reveal though and the thing I’m most interested in is what’s going to happen to Blackout. Assuming they bring back the single-player campaign are they also going to do Blackout as well? That’s potentially four completely different game modes, four different games really, unless they get rid of Zombies to fit it all in (I’d be fine with that). I’m sure they hoped that Blackout would be bigger than it was but I really enjoy it, more than Fortnite and Apex Legends. I know the obvious suggestion is to release as a separate free-to-play game but I wonder if the problems with Apex Legends are putting Activision off that idea? With Firestorm also not making much of an impact I think companies are already realising battle royale is not a licence to print money. Statto [/metro-fact-box]   E-mail your comments to: gamecentral@ukmetro.co.uk   [metro-fact-box title=”Definition of fun” colour=”grey” icon=”no-icon”] In response to Ninjaboy’s letter, I feel obliged to agree that a sense of humour is very important in a game. That said, in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey I found the writing and gameplay was fun enough that I didn’t need proper out loud laughs and was happy with the story and gameplay. I played a fair chunk of Metro Exodus and found it far too bleak, regardless of the great story and gameplay. Before that, I played Far Cry: New Dawn, which was silly, but I really enjoyed it. There’s a balance somewhere but my conclusion, as a middle-aged and time-poor gamer, is that the games I play must be fun. I can’t define what makes it fun for me (and I know it’ll be different for everyone) but a combination of gameplay, story AND sheer joy need to be a part of it. That’s my perspective. I’m sure plenty of people will disagree. But would it be fun if we were all the same? BadgerOfDoom [/metro-fact-box]   [metro-fact-box title=”Once is enough” colour=”grey” icon=”no-icon”] So, the first part of the final DLC for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is out. I’ve been looking forward to it because I’ve really enjoyed the game. It’s easily the best Assassin’s Creed game in my opinion. I played it through as Kassandra and now that New Game+ is an option I have thought about starting it again. However, a quick check of the hours I’ve played it have made me think twice. Before I finish the rest of the DLC my current play time stands at 160 hours, which is an awful lot for a single=player game. Much as I’ve enjoyed it I can’t imagine ever committing that sort of time to a game I’ve already finished. So when I’ve finished the final bit of DLC I think I’ll be done with Ancient Greece. Malaka! Neil [/metro-fact-box]   [metro-fact-box title=”Boxed away” colour=”grey” icon=”no-icon”] Being seeing some reports about how Nintendo.com has been removing most references to the Wii U from the site, although nothing seems to have changed on the UK site as far as I can see. Despite all the Switch ports it’s clearly not an era that Nintendo wants to dwell on and I can’t really blame them. I bought a Wii U at the time and while it was clearly a very poorly supported console I still had a lot of fun with the more unique games like Nintendo Land and Splatoon. To this do I insist that Nintendo Land is the best party game ever and I’ve never had a anyone not enjoy. Sure, it’s short-lived but some things are… the Wii U included. The problem is I don’t see Nintendo Land can ever be replicated on a console, unless Nintendo links up to a tablet or requires the use of two Switches. Neither of which I can imagine them doing. It’s one of those games that only really works on its original format and while my Wii U is boxed away I do keep it within easy access and will be continuing to play at least one of its games for many years to come. Onibee [/metro-fact-box]   [metro-fact-box title=”Wrong Joker” colour=”grey” icon=”no-icon”] You know, Joker from Persona 5 being a guest character for Mortal Kombat 11 might not be as demented as it first sounds. Whenever the gang defeated an enemy with an all-out attack it would cut to a silhouette of the enemy or enemies and what I presume to be a giant geyser of blood shooting out of them. Pretty gross. If we were to see this in full detail then it would be quite worthy of a Mortal Kombat Fatality. A second one could be where Morgana keeps insisting that you’re tired and you should go to bed. If Scorpion tries to ignore her then she will put him to bed permanently… Bwahahaha! Sorry. It’s still pretty demented, though. DMR [/metro-fact-box]   Catch up on every previous Games Inbox here   [metro-fact-box title=”Someone else’s problem” colour=”grey” icon=”no-icon”] As easy as it is to get angry at publishers who keep trying to put loot boxes and other unfair features into games I have to say I’m not really sure I blame them. It is the legally required goal for any publicly traded company to earn as much profit as possible for their shareholders. It is literally against the law for them to do anything other than try and get as much money as possible out of everything they do. So when a new means to do that pops up it’s hardly surprising they would try to take advantage of it, especially when it proves so successful. I think we have to recognise that, as with certain political movements around the world at the moment, it’s pointless blaming other people when the real fault is with the ordinary people. Microtransactions are only successful because people pay for them. And considering no loot box has ever contained anything that was even close to necessary to enjoying a game it’s hard to understand why, or why the onus should be one someone else (publishers, the government) to save people from themselves. For those that don’t buy them, do you try to explain to your friends that do how bad an influence they’re having on gaming? Do you just buying the odd one now and then and tell yourself that that doesn’t count? Something encouraged Warner Bros. to put them in Mortal Kombat 11, and that same thing will encourage others in the future too. Unless we all decide to say no together and not just assume it’s someone else’s problem. Kreegorm [/metro-fact-box]   [metro-fact-box title=”Inbox also-rans” colour=”grey” icon=”no-icon”] Considering how much Japan seems to love NieR:Automata I’m surprised we haven’t heard about a sequel yet. It’s obviously coming but I’m hoping the delay is a sign that it’s getting a much bigger budget this time round. Can’t wait! Sluggo Am I the only one that actually liked Anthem? I feel like a pariah but I’ve been playing it a lot lately and it’s still very easy to find a team via matchmaking. Bricke32 [/metro-fact-box]   [metro-fact-box title=”This week’s Hot Topic” colour=”grey” icon=”exclamation”] The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Grackle, who asks what old game has aged the worst? Going back to a much-loved video game can often be a traumatising experience, as something you remember as being amazing is revealed to have aged less than gracefully, but what’s your worst experience with an old title? Was the problem the old-fashioned graphics, the controls, or gameplay that seems too simplistic or unfair nowadays? What still works about the game and is there a modern equivalent that does the same sort of things but better?
