MARTINSBURG – Nancy Ostrowski knows this state. And she thought she knew the bishop. Her family has attended St. Joseph's Catholic Church since the Romanesque Renaissance building was bequeathed in 1860, just before West Virginia broke out from Virginia to support the Union. Their ancestors saw the tough years at Martinsburg, when the mills that […]

Banquet of the Word

Welcome Back to Banquet of the Word! Join us every week for background on this Sunday readings. Our mission is simple: We want to help everyone in “pew-land” get more out of mass. Today we celebrate Corpus Christi, which translates to “the body of Christ.” This feast day is, in a sense, a continuation of […]

Din Tai Fung is a famous Taiwanese restaurant.  According to information I gleaned about it, Din Tai Fung has about 250 restaurants around Asia.  However, it only opened its very first restaurant in Europe, in December 2018 in London, Convent Garden.   There was a lot of media fan-fare running up to the opening; that’s how […]

Bring Something to the Table

Since my workload has been ridiculous, I haven’t had the time to think and research my usual blog posts.  So, instead of trying to find the time for full on inspiration, I’m going to go with some quick snippets until I get my life back. This topic-guilty pleasures. You know you have them. The foods […]

Love At The Top

These three photos are from the same friend. He takes the time to bike into the cemetery and visit my husband. He then shares the photo each time with the bike. This is a beautiful example of someone “being with you” (#10) for the marathon of caregiving and/or trudging through widowhood. One of the questions […]

Savouring mustard from starters to desserts in the house of either the  Easter Bunny or the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland was a pretty cool story. The place looks like it belongs in a story book.  This little house is truly scrumptious though it is not made out of ginger bread like the one […]

Holy Name of Jesus

Are wehungry enough? They all ate and were satisfied. Last week, we discussed the hungry Jesus and His chief hunger, unity of life with the Father and Spirit and our participation in that reality, that meal where love is perfected. It is the meal to which We have gained access. We were left with the question: Are […]

The Blues: A War Widow's Memoir

Darth Vader Comes to Town and One More Deployment I remember the day in 2004 when Roger came in the house with fire in his eyes, crooked smile intact. “So,” he said, excited, nothing light ever began this way. “I can join the local fire department and they will train me. I talked to this […]

Akron News-Reporter
The rumor mill was buzzing last year of possible closure of ABC Development Center due to lack of a director and trained staff. For a short time, the possibility of that happening became more likely, but the board worked vigorously to prevent it.  Teri Stivers hopped on board as the director in September 2018, and in March of this year, Patty Denbo returned to ABC and is serving as co-assistant director with Stivers. Denbo was the driving force behind Akron Balanced Childcare Center, which will be celebrating its 25th anniversary this September.  When ABC first started, they met in the building that was the old vet’s office, but is now known as In His Name House.  ABC moved to its current building on the corner of Ash and Fifth five years later. There is a new step and smiles are more prevalent than have been seen in the last three months.  Things are getting back on an even keel, there is more staff and ABC is now working to get their infant room open again. Staff at ABC include Miranda Clawson, Kylie Feemster, Lauren Koch, Shirley Stevens (Nurse Consultant).  Substitutes are Jennifer Couch and Bobbi Hottinger. Felicity Ward will be joining the staff in a few weeks. They have also started working with the Early Childhood Council to get more training, as they are stretching their limits.  They would like to become trained to be able to have CCP slots for children.  Head Start is also working toward that goal.  This has all come about because of the survey done by Head Start, which shows that 75 kids in the county are three-year-old and up and not in any kind of program. At Easter time, ABC did a fundraising campaign by making Easter baskets.  Holly Peterson donated some money to buy items for the baskets and Meghan Peterson, Latte Da, parents and community parents also donated items to fill the baskets, which the staff and board sold.  They were also helped by Trendy Acres, who had the Easter Bunny present and parents were able to get a picture of their child/children with the Easter Bunny for a small fee. ABC received a grant from the Colorado Shines Quality Improvement initiative for $2,500, which enabled them to put new wood chips down in the backyard around all of the playground equipment.  The freshmen class from Akron High School put the chips down on May 6 as part of their Community Pride activities.  ABC would like to thank everyone for their support of the center and all the help they have received. ABC staff and board are working very hard to become a better trained staff for their children now in their care and for future children who will come to the center.  There is no question that ABC is not going to close any time soon, because the board and staff are making sure that does not happen and will not happen for a long time.
