Frank Lampard has high hopes for his first season as Chelsea boss (Picture: Getty Images) Frank Lampard is aware that he has a huge task on his hands as Chelsea manager, but insists that his side will be aiming to win the Premier League title this season. The Blues legend is taking charge of a top flight team for the first time after just one year at Derby amounting to his experience in management so far. It is a tricky situation that Lampard is taking over, with Chelsea under a transfer ban, meaning he has to work with the squad he was left by Maurizio Sarri, minus Eden Hazard, who has left for Real Madrid. Despite the things not going in his favour, the 41-year-old is not watering down his ambition, and believes he has the quality in his side to make up the 26 points which separated the Blues and champions Man City last season. Lampard and assistant Jody Morris have a big task on their hands (Picture: /Getty Images) ‘The only way I know to change that gap is through absolute hard work and focus,’ said Lampard. ‘Those basics don’t change, and with the transfer ban there is even more clarity because we can’t bring in players. ‘Every day I read City are buying and Manchester United are going to buy. All these teams are going to do business and that’s going to strengthen them. ‘So we have to be realistic, but then I see every day the quality we have here. And I think about the players not here like Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Willian, Antonio Rudiger and Reece James, and I think we have a competitive squad. I believe in them and there’s more because we have a lot of younger players. ‘There can be an uplift. That’s not me saying I’m going to make the difference. It will be the players who make the difference. ‘So there’s the challenge. Now, can we win the league? It’s going to be a big ask. But we have to set out with that mind-set.’ [metro-zone-post-strip] The former England international believes the basics of management are the same whether he is at Derby or Chelsea, whether he is working with inexperienced youngsters or World Cup winners. ‘I already sensed the size of the club and differences off the pitch, dealing with players with 70 caps and titles. Pedro has won God-knows-how-many titles. But the basics are the same,’ continued Lampard. ‘On the pitch I will ask for one thing and that’s absolutely buying into how I want to do it. I don’t think you can compromise on that.’ [metro-link url=”https://metro.co.uk/2019/07/19/chelsea-youngster-ethan-ampadu-heading-rb-leipzig-loan-10429168/” title=”Chelsea youngster Ethan Ampadu heading to RB Leipzig on loan”] [metro-link url=”https://metro.co.uk/2019/07/19/christian-pulisic-admits-hes-had-tough-start-to-chelsea-career-10427977/” title=”Christian Pulisic admits he’s had ‘tough’ start to Chelsea career”]

“Anfield under the lights”. It’s almost become a bit of a cliché. Then again, clichés exist for a reason. Just ask Barcelona. They were the latest in a long line of teams, ranging from world-class to scrappy third division sides, that have fallen to the overwhelming atmosphere that takes over once the sun sets behind […]

Christian Pulisic made his Chelsea debut in a friendly defeat against Kawasaki Frontale (Picture: Getty) Christian Pulisic admits he has endured a ‘tough’ start to his Chelsea career but is confident he will thrive under the management of Frank Lampard. Chelsea signed the USA international winger from Borussia Dortmund for a club-record £58million fee back in January but the 20-year-old spent the second half of last season back on loan at the Bundesliga club. Pulisic’s involvement in the CONCACAF Gold Cup delayed his start to pre-season training but he belatedly made his deubut as a second half substitute in Friday’s 1-0 defeat against Kawasaki Frontale. The speedy winger, who is likely to represent a direct replacement for Eden Hazard, impressed during a 25-minute cameo appearance but confessed he is still to adjust to his new surroundings and teammates. [metro-zone-post-strip] ‘Yeah I’m really happy to be here with the team and get in an actual match for the first time it feels really good,’ he said following his debut. ‘They were a very good opponent, you saw they tested us for 90 minutes and scored a good goal in the end. It was a tough one but that’s why we’re out here getting ready for the season. ‘We want to try to progress in every game and try to get more match fit and 90 minute ready so that helped us out today. 'I'm really happy to be here with the team. It feels good.' 😀 Hear the thoughts of @cpulisic_10, following his first minutes in a Chelsea shirt! #CFCinJapan pic.twitter.com/BQAB1hv5ll — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) July 19, 2019 ‘It’s been tough getting into the things, I’m feeling really good. It’s great to work with the coach and all these guys. It’s tested me but it’s great so far. ‘It’s been great I grew up watching him [Frank] and to have him here giving me pointers and helping the team. It’s awesome to have him around and nice to have a guy we can really relate to. ‘It’ll be another great game [against Barcelona] and will get us more ready for the start of the season.’ [metro-tag-post-strip]
