Tom Whitebirch pulled his 2015 GMC Acadia to the curb in front of Keyes Motors on Van Nuys Boulevard last week, and saw in his mind’s eye a short, fat kid wearing red and white checkered overalls holding up a hamburger on a plate, smiling at him. TOM AND HIS 40 CHEVY. Tom Whitebirch at 16 years old after starting to primer my ’40 Chevy with my mothers brand new Electrolux vacuum cleaner. She was quite upset when she caught me. To improvise I used a fly spray can with a pint container on it. It took a long time but finally finished. (Courtesy Photo) He’s not 82 now, he’s 16 – driving his 1941 Mercury Coupe with a powder blue paint job he paid $200 bucks for in 1953. Not the paint job, the whole car. A Bob’s Big Boy Restaurant used to be right here. It’s where all his pals in the Jesters, Hi Hats, and Ambassadors boy’s clubs at Van Nuys High would have their meetings every Wednesday night. Little did they know that what they did after those meetings broke up would put Van Nuys Boulevard on the map for the next three decades as one of the hippest, coolest areas in all of Los Angeles. Dressed in Levi’s, loafers, argyle socks, a white t-shirt with a Pendleton shirt over it, they began cruising Van Nuys Boulevard in their hot cars and perfect ducktails. Cool guys and hot girls making Wednesday night the best night of the week. “I watched the movie “American Graffiti” with my grown granddaughter recently and she said ‘grandpa, that looks like so much fun.’ I said, ‘honey, that was my life as a teenager.’ ” So, jump in the car and cruise the Van Nuys Boulevard of 1953 with a member of the original cast. “After leaving Bob’s, we’d head up to Vanowen to Spenser’s Drive-in to see what was going on before heading up to Sherman Way, where we started cruising,” Tom says. “On the corner was a restaurant bar named the Live Oak Inn owned by movie star James Craig. I used to sell the L.A. Herald-Express on that corner for seven cents when I was 12. “Johnny Mack Brown, the cowboy actor, would come out of that place plowed, and always stop to buy a paper from me. I had to keep three cents in my pocket because he wanted the change. “I’d give it to him, and he’d give me a dime tip. If I didn’t have the three cents, he’d make me go get it, and wouldn’t give me any tip.” Across the street from the Live Oak was Jim Clinton’s Men’s store, and a little further down at Vose Street, the end of the line for the old Red car. “The Chili Burger was down near Hamlin. I remember Sam, the hot dog man, pushing his little cart up the street selling hot dogs, and nearby the Van Nuys Theater where I’d spend Friday nights. “Over on Gilmore there was the old J.C. Penney store, where you could go in the shoe department and stick your foot in the X-ray machine, and look at the bones in your feet. Up by Victory was King’s Western Wear, where you could buy Levi’s for $3.75 a pair. “Around the corner was House of Sight & Sound where you could pick out a 45 record and take it into a booth and listen to it, and the Van Nuys Bowling Alley where used to work setting up pins for 10 cents a line.” Cupid’s Hot Dogs, Coffee Dan’s, Owl Drug Store, Schulman’s Men’s store, the Pool Hall, the Rainbow Roller Rink, Cracker Barrel market, and the Rivoli Theater, Tom cruised by them all. “I went to my first concert at the Rivoli in 1955 – Big Jay McNeeley and Joe Houston in Battle of the Saxes, emceed by D.J. Dick Hugg Huggy Boy. Man, that was great.” And when they hit the end of the line at Burbank Boulevard, they’d turn around and do it all over again – checking out the girls checking them out, too – just like they did in “American Graffiti.” But, at the end of the night, they always came back to where they began – Bob’s for a combo plate and cherry coke. “It was a lot of innocent fun and good times,” he says. Tom was in the graduating class of 1955 at Van Nuys High – the same class with Natalie Wood, and half a year ahead of Robert Redford and Don Drysdale. Bill was about to end, and they wanted that educational help from the government. “I think half the guys in my class got their GED’s in the service,” Tom says, back to reality now – looking at a boulevard he doesn’t recognize anymore. “You know, I really think the ‘50s was the best decade of the whole century. And boy, do I wish I still had that powder blue ’41 Merc Coupe I paid $200 for.” From time to time, I’ll be writing about personal memories from the Valley’s past because we still have a large population of old Vals born and raised here with great stories to tell.
