In the wake of the #MeToo movement and a much wider public discourse on gender issues, there has never been a better time to study Gender Studies (MA). Equality and diversity are seen as vital to organisational success, and public feminism has a renewed prominence in culture – yet tackling gender inequalities remains a challenge. […]

Day 2 dawned with minor sunburn aches and major music expectations because the heaviest bands of the festival were on the ticket today: Lamb of God, Gojira, The Black Dahlia Murder, and Killswitch Engage. I started my musical experiences with a band I had never heard of, No1Cares – a duo peopled by brothers, vocal/guitar […]

A brief foreword: this essay is the first in a series, written about events in Scotland which explore and champion women’s rights. Each of these events is taking place within the space of a fortnight, and it feels like a turning point in mainstream conversations about sex and gender – worth a spot of feminist […]

From Print to Digital: Publishing Revolutions

It’s looking more and more like “Project Runway” season 17 is going to come down to a head-to-head battle between Sebastian Grey and Hester Sunshine. Grey led our predictions for several weeks earlier in the season. But then Sunshine won three design challenges and took over the top spot for the last three weeks. Now Grey is back in the lead going into week 11 as the show nears the home stretch. What do you think? You can join other “Project Runway” fans who make their predictions every week here in our predictions center. Grey takes back the top spot with leading odds of 8/5 as of this writing; those odds are based on the combined predictions of the “Runway” fans we’ve polled, and they change as more people make their predictions, so the exact numbers may be different by the time you read this. But he’s currently ahead of Sunshine by a wide margin; now Sunshine is in the runner-up position with 11/4 odds. What changed from last week to this week that changed our minds? [pmc-related-link href=”https://pages.email.goldderby.com/signup/” type=”SIGN UP” target=”_self”]for Gold Derby’s free newsletter with latest predictions[/pmc-related-link] It probably comes down to the last challenge. In “What Do You Care About?” the designers were tasked with creating looks inspired by a cause they were passionate about. After six weeks of middling scores that didn’t get him positive or negative feedback from the judges, Grey ended up back in the top three for an innovative look that combined multiple shades of color to deliver a message about racial harmony. He has still never had a low score. [predictions-widget id=1202816990]Meanwhile, Sunshine struggled with tulle (again) as she tried to create a bright, bold, celebratory look in support of LGBTQ equality. Sunshine thought she bombed the challenge, but the judges didn’t seem to have a problem with it as they sent her off with positive comments and a safe score. But that moment of self-doubt for Sunshine, combined with Grey’s return to the top of the heap, was enough to convince our readers to move Grey back up in their predictions. But in fashion, one day you’re in and the next you’re out. So the balance of power could change yet again on Thursday night. [pmc-related-link href=”https://www.goldderby.com/leagues/” type=”PREDICT” target=”_self”]’Project Runway’ now; change them until Thursday night’s show[/pmc-related-link] Be sure to make your predictions so that the contestants can see how they’re faring in our racetrack odds. You can keep changing your predictions until just before the next episode airs every Thursday on Bravo. You’ll compete to win a spot on our leaderboard and eternal bragging rights. These days it feels like the biggest stars in Hollywood are green screens. The rise of CGI means movies can show just about anything their writers can dream up – and studios can vie for our dollars with increasingly-ostentatious spectacles of effects. And then, there’s TCM. Turner Classic Movies is quietly, consistently offering up an […]
