Living in London, where square footage comes at a premium we’ve always needed to be creative with the space that we’ve had in order to make the most out of it. Described to us by the estate agent as a ‘beiju two bedroom workers cottage’, lets just say that fitting all of life’s essentials into […]

Darker woods, whether natural or stained, are not always the obvious choice. Some may feel that dark wood is too austere or formal. This isn’t always the case! Wood is a wonderful, natural material to introduce into the home and its beauty lies in the limitless variety of tone and texture. An interior only starts to look bland when this tonality of woods is unvaried and all looks the same. Learn how to anchor the space with touches of darker wood here and there.

IF, like us, you’d perhaps class sleeping as a hobby, you need the best bed you can find. But which is right for you, and how do you go about choosing the perfect one? There are several key factors to consider, including size, style, built-in storage options – and, of course, price, which we’ve broken down so you can make an informed choice. When it comes to size, UK beds come in six variations: small single, single, queen (also known as a small double), double, king and super king. The first three are best suited to children and guest rooms; the latter three are usually found in an adult’s main bedroom. The general rule is that you buy the biggest bed your room can comfortably accommodate (and that you can afford, of course), and remember that the bigger your bed, the bigger and more expensive your mattress and bed linen will be, so factor this in to your budget. Then there’s the style, which is very much down to personal taste and also your current decor – you wouldn’t choose an ornate, Rococo-look bed for your minimal, Scandic-style decor. But if you’re still not sure what style of bed you like, here are a few pointers to steer you in the right direction: metal frames work well with retro or vintage-style decor. If you like a natural, unfussy look that won’t date, go for a wooden bed; look for tapered legs for a Scandi vibe. Upholstered or leather beds are a great way of including a dash of hotel chic to your room and will add a feeling of luxury too. For even more opulence, a four-poster bed may be the way to go. Are you looking for a bed with storage? Almost all divan beds feature built-in storage. This can take the form of drawers that pull out of the sides or the bottom of the bed, while some lift up to reveal storage space beneath. The difference between a divan bed and a regular bed frame is that a divan has a fixed ‘platform’ that the mattress sits on top of, whereas regular bed frames have springs or wooden slats that support the mattress. This means that a divan base has a little less give than a bed frame, so is ideal if you prefer a higher degree of firmness. It’s also a smart bet if you want extra storage that’s neatly tucked away. As with the style of a bed, how much you’re willing to splash out on one is entirely up to you (or your bank account) – but if spending, say, £2,000 on a new bed makes your eyes water, think about it this way: a decent bed will last, on average, 10 years (possibly more) – that’s 3,650 days, give or take a couple for leap years. Let’s assume you spend anywhere up to 50 days a year sleeping somewhere other than your bed, that leaves 3,150 days. Our inner Rachel Riley says that equates to your £2,000 bed costing just 63.5 pence a day over 10 years. Not much for a good night’s sleep. Two In One Hemnes Day-Bed Frame in White, £240, Ikea – buy here Not many do affordable and practical better than Ikea, and there’s a reason why this daybed with built-in storage has been in their stable for years. Perfect for your spare room, this smart design can be extended from a single to a double and has three drawers to boot. And when you’re not using it as a bed, it doubles up as bench seating – all for less than £250. Pleat To Meet You Temper Horton Ottoman Bedstead, from £1,599, Barker & Storehouse – buy here If you want maximum storage from a divan bed, choose one that lifts up, rather than one with drawers – you’ll get more storage space as there’s no drawer frames to worry about. It’s also designed to sit flush to a wall, saving you even more space. This upholstered bed is available in king or super king sizes and two colours. Button Up Skye Double Bed with Storage Drawers, £649 from Made.com – buy here Want extra storage but don’t want to compromise on comfort? Go for a slatted bed frame, rather than a fixed divan base with drawers to get the best of both worlds. This design has a classic button-back headboard and is available in two sizes (double and king) two colours and has two generous-sized drawers. Store And Order Happy Beds Fabio White Wooden Storage Bed With Shelves, £364.99, Amazon – buy here If storage is at the top of your list of priorities, then storage is what you shall have with this clever bed that has drawers and plenty of built-in shelves. Pop your bits and bobs in the shelves at the bottom of the bed and in the headboard and stow blankets and bed linen in the two drawers; it may even mean you can do away with bedside tables for a less-cluttered space. The Fabio wooden storage bed comes in double and king sizes. Classic Good Looks Shalstone Double Bed Frame in Oak, £899, John Lewis – buy here Still stuck as to what bed to buy? Why not go for a design classic like this one by Ercol and rest assured you’ll have a bed that will never go out of style. It’s made from solid oak and poplar, so you know it will last for many years, and is a great choice for lovers of mid-century style. It’s available as a double, and comes with a huge range of matching bedroom furniture Yellow Fever Wallis Bed, from £1,899 for a double (£2,399 for yellow velvet), Heal’s – buy here Remember that statement bed we were talking about earlier? You can’t get more statement than yellow velvet. Your bedroom is the most personal space in your entire house, so what should you hold back? But if yellow isn’t for you, this sleek modern design is available in a whopping 39 different finishes, as well as three colour options for the feet. Choose from double, king or super king sizes.
