JD WETHERSPOON is calling time on European drinks served in its boozers here. But the pro-Brexit chain will keep serving up popular Irish bevvies such as Guinness, we can reveal. JD Wetherspoon has stopped serving Erdinger Free beer from Germany in Ireland and instead sells Adnams Ghost Ship low alcohol While Wetherspoon’s continues to sell German liqueur Jagermeister and Moet & Chandon in its Irish bars, these drinks are being discontinued in the UK as part of founder Tim Martin’s bid for a no-deal EU withdrawal. This means that punters in the five Irish bars can enjoy French champagne or a Jagerbomb while their fellow tipplers in Britain must put up with UK alternatives Strika Herbal Liqueur and Denbies Sparkling Whitedowns Brut. There have been calls for a boycott after the chain’s move to stop selling a raft of drinks made in Europe. Just like in the UK, JD Wetherspoon has stopped serving Erdinger Free beer from Germany in Ireland and instead sells Adnams Ghost Ship low alcohol. Wetherspoon founder Tim Martin Similarly Staropramen from the Czech Republic, Denmark’s Tuborg, Spanish Rioja wine and Italian Pinot Grigio are no longer sold. Instead, bars such as the Three Tun Tavern in Blackrock, Co Dublin, are offering alternatives such as Australian brand Hardys, Villa Maria from New Zealand and Trivento Malbec from Argentina. A spokesman for JD Wetherspoon confirmed to the Irish Sun that the chain was removing European drinks where it could — including from its branches here. Moet was still for sale in the Forty Foot this week He said: “It is purely because of Brexit.” But Martin is taking a pragmatic approach here. French Moet was still for sale in Dun Laoghaire’s The Forty Foot yesterday, despite Martin insisting he would pull the plug on French champagne. And an insider has also told us Martin has no plans to stop selling its Irish products, including Guinness, Bulmers and Jameson, in Britain, saying: “They won’t be touched whatsoever”. The Silver Penny is due to open in May 2019 in Lower Abbey Street with the creation of 75 jobs. It also working on opening The Tullow Gate in Co Carlow plus the Keavan’s Port Hotel and bar on Camden Street, Dublin, this summer. As well as the Forty Foot and the Three Tun Tavern, it has the Linen Weaver in Cork City, The Great Wood in Blanchardstown. Co. Dublin, and The Old Borough in Swords, Co. Dublin.
