VOICE OF THE HWY

The food industry has gotten wind of the plant-based trend, which is catching on strongly in the US now, after growing by leaps and bounds in Israel and the UK for many years. Apparently, neither investors, nor most managements know anything about plant-based nutrition and there is a strong tendency to some out with transitional […]

April showers bring you-know-what. Yup, it’s about to be full-on mud season. So treat yourself to some style-wise spring rain gear that will keep you high and dry — no matter how soaked things get out there. We all know umbrellas can be a godsend, but they can just as easily double as a style statement. Take the Women’s Original Moustache Bubble Umbrella by Hunter ($50 at hunterboots.com). With its welted seam construction, curved handle, and wide canopy, it’s the ultimate protector. It’s partly transparent with a bright, colorful trim. Or how about a study in spring florals, like Ted Baker’s Women’s Vitoria Flourish Umbrella ($49.99 at countryattire.com)? In dusky pink, it’s as feminine and functional to a T. Ditto MacKenzie-Childs’ Ascot Umbrella ($88 at saksfifthavenue.com), a study in fun contrast, with its graphic black and white striping taken over by a blooming floral border. #gallery-1594393-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1594393-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-1594393-1 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-1594393-1 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */ MARCH 28, 2019, BOSTON – Women’s Original Moustache Bubble Umbrella by Hunter. Marks & Spencer’s lined Rain Bucket Hat ($31 at marksandspencer.com) is a perfect choice for everyday wear. It has space to tuck all of your hair up into —which it doesn’t leave flat or frizzy — and is lightweight enough to fold up without losing shape. On days when you want to lean toward a style statement, opt for the Go Go Rain Bucket Hat by Eric Javits ($225 at nordstrom.com). Pull on the clear, high-gloss design and you’re both super mod and super cute. Speaking of transparency, pull on something like the Women’s Clear Poncho ($45 at totes.com). Its long cut and swingy design zips and snaps up over any outfit — including your bag, to keep it dry — and has a generously sized hood to save your hair. And then there are the trenches — the rainy-day style savior. The Belted Lightweight Jacket by Halogen ($129.90 on nordstrom.com) is a stunner  in red hibiscus — a hue to brighten up any gray day. Likewise the Suki Waterproof Coat ($95-$152 at bodenusa.com), a patch-pocket, waterproof coat with a soft quilted lining and a flattering, fitted cut that’s especially cute thanks to its navy and ivory polka dot print. Lastly, there are just plain ol’ pretty choices like the London Fog Hooded Raincoat ($124.99 at macys.com), with its removable hood and club collar. Get one in sea glass, a lovely shade of spring-y light aqua, and you’ll get compliments wherever you wear it. #gallery-1594393-2 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1594393-2 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-1594393-2 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-1594393-2 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */ MARCH 28, 2019, BOSTON – Marks and Spencer’s Rain Bucket Hat. Photo from bodenusa.com MARCH 28, 2019, BOSTON – London Fog’s Hooden Raincoat in Sea Glass from Macy’s. Photo from macys.com   Personally, I find something nostalgic and comforting about rain gear. It reminds me of being a little kid and bundling up in adorable printed or styled boots and waterproof toggle coats. Nowhere could that be more true than in Lands End’s mid-calf Women’s Rain Boots ($69.95 at landsend.com) in bright, nautical yellow. The rubber booties are equipped with smart-looking navy blue edging and side buckles, plus super soft interior lining and a padded footbed, so my feet stay extra dry, but also extremely comfy. MARCH 28, 2019, BOSTON – Sakroots Rhythm Waterproof Rain Boots from Nordstrom. Photo from nordstrom.com   I also love the undeniable stylishness of the knee-high, pretty patterned numbers like Sakroots’s Rhythm Waterproof Rain Boots ($54.95 at nordstrom.com). The jersey-lined style keeps feet extremely dry. As do the Simeon Check-Print Rain Boot by Burberry ($390 at neimanmarcus.com). Part black rubber and part signature Burberry check, they’re a bit of a splurge, but worth it — is there a more elegant way to face the stormy skies?

New York City’s Javits Center is a big, boring building that hosts big, boring conferences. But on a recent day in February, the Manhattan convention center was filled with giant Lego dinosaurs, twirling K’Nex roller coasters, flippable sequin-covered Beanie Babies, 3D Harry Potter puzzles, shooting Star Wars figurines, dissolvable bath bombs in every scent imaginable, […]
