NOT for years has a man dishonoured high office as  Philip Hammond is now doing. If he intends to rebrand himself as the Remainers’ rebel leader why doesn’t he have the guts to resign immediately? Hammond hopes to redefine himself as the man who stopped No Deal, crashed the new PM, triggered an election and possibly destroyed the Tories Instead he is misusing his last days as Chancellor, texting fellow Tory mutineers to undermine Boris Johnson, then  sneaking off to the foreign Press to talk up a second referendum and threaten to topple his own party’s Government. All while virtue-signalling to Brussels about the “vulgar, thoughtless and noisy” Brits desperate for Brexit to happen, as our democracy demands. Instead of resigning Philip Hammond is misusing his last days as Chancellor, texting fellow Tory mutineers to undermine Boris, then sneaking off to the foreign Press to talk up a second referendum Hammond has been a disaster as Chancellor, his achievements all but non-existent. He now hopes to redefine himself as the man who stopped No Deal, crashed the new PM and Government, triggered an election and possibly destroyed the Tories. Quite the legacy. There are a fair few walking calamities in Theresa May’s Cabinet. But none worse. A rookie error IS it any surprise Mrs May secured such a disastrous deal when she never threatened the EU that we might leave without one? Any negotiator has to keep the option of walking away. Yet the EU’s Michel Barnier says our PM didn’t mention it. Theresa May negotiated with a weak hand after never threatening to leave the EU without a deal, according to Michel Barnier She told voters “No Deal is better than a bad deal” but never  meant a word. The first person to raise it in Brussels was her second Brexit Secretary, Leaver Dominic Raab. “Your Prime Minister has never dared say this to us — never,” Barnier squeaked in shock. There’s a book Mrs May’s team should have read: Negotiating For Dummies. [article-rail-section title=”MOST READ IN COMMENT” posts_category=”317″ posts_number=”6″ query_type=”recent” /] Greens are red THE public, our police and politicians must wake up to the truth behind Extinction Rebellion, the insufferably arrogant eco mob aiming to unleash  chaos. Well-meaning supporters mistake them for a mainstream voice with legitimate demands. In fact their leaders are anarchists,  whipping up environmental panic as a means to destroy capitalism and replace our democratic system. The public, cops and politicians must wake up to the truth behind Extinction Rebellion, the insufferably arrogant eco mob aiming to unleash chaos One admitted on Radio 4 that he wants a permanent job-destroying recession, claiming economic growth — which raises living standards and funds our public services — is killing  the planet. If “mass death” and “climate genocide” were genuinely and provably imminent then, yes, they would trump everything. Extinction Rebellion’s fact-denying hysteria and absurd ultimatums do not. Nor are they a licence to defy the law and inflict hardship — costing taxpayers millions — on people innocently going about their day. Especially when the true motivation is Marxist revolution. MPs should not engage with them. Cops must swiftly arrest them, keep our roads moving and our planes flying. They must not indulge this doomsday cult and its dishonest motives. PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Protesters dumped gallons of fake blood on a Southwest Portland street to send a message to ICE. A small group of people from the groups Extinction Rebellion PDX and Occupy ICE PDX gathered outside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement building on Southwest Macadam Avenue on Friday afternoon. Activists held signs that read “ICE has blood on its hands.” People dressed in white jumpsuits with “ICE” emblazoned across their backs emptied 50-gallons of fake blood onto the street. (KOIN)Protesters dumped 50 gallons of fake blood on the street outside the ICE building in SW Portland, July 19, 2019. (KOIN) Extinction Rebellion released the following statement about the protest: “Their action was a protest of the inhumane conditions of the US immigration system including those at detention camps at the Southern border and nationwide that are directly resulting in the deaths of immigrants, as well as an effort to highlight the role of climate change in forced migration worldwide. The action is called “El Río De Sangre/The River Of Blood.” Río de Sangre is named to evoke both the Rio Grande and the bloodshed of the US’s racist immigration policies. The blood-made of water, food coloring, and xanthan gum-symbolized the lives lost in the journey across the border as well as in ICE and CBP custody, which include six young children. Protesters dipped their hands in the crimson liquid to signify that the US government has the blood of asylum-seekers on their hands.”

I live in a small town in Shropshire called Much Wenlock. I moved here in 2007. In the summer of that year it rained a lot. I mean, really, a lot. So much so that the town flooded. Weeks of steady rain had left the fields surrounding the town water-logged. The earth was sodden. So, […]

We ran into an Extinction Rebellion children’s march in Manchester a couple of months ago. It was heartening to see young children and teenagers taking to the streets and making themselves heard. I think their parents should br very proud. We went to the first Cambridge Pride event. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t great and the […]

Extinction Rebellion protesters have told a court why they believe blocking a city centre route was justified.

The 16 environmental activists all admit they wilfully obstructed a public highway, but they have pleaded not guilty to the offence because they argue their actions were justified by the ‘climate emergency’.

They are accused of blocking Newfoundland Road and Temple Way, near the M32, on July 17.

They appeared at Bristol Magistrates’ Court today (July 19) and you can read our full coverage of the hearings <a data-content-type="live-event" data-link-tracking="InArticle|Link" href="https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/live-ext

Just as I didn’t know what to watch after Wallace and Gromit, I switched to the remainder of the Liberal hustings to hear the end of the discussion. It went like this: Question: “Do you think we should curb internal flights?” [Answer: “I don’t think that is feasible at the moment, we need to invest […]

I can't believe it!

“We stand now where two roads diverge. But unlike the roads in Robert Frost‘s familiar poem, they are not equally fair. The road we have long been traveling is deceptively easy, a smooth superhighway on which we progress with great speed, but at its end lies disaster. The other fork of the road — the […]

Loyal readers may recall that I went on at some length about a motor-cycle glove which I had appeared to lose when en route to chez-moi some time ago and and then went on to leave its partner at a stop-off on my way back.  Once back at base, despite (yet again) an absence of […]

This visionary proposal is made against the backdrop of the existential challenges facing all humanity. It makes inspiring reading in these otherwise depressing political times.   Challenges and opportunities Sir David Attenborough warns “Climate change is humanity’s greatest threat in thousands of years.” “…time is running out.” “We must recognize, in our day-to-day lives and […]

Desperado Philosophy

Neoliberalism, representing the subjection of all life forms to the economic needs of a single supremacist species, incorporates a concentration of violence so extreme that resistance often appears futile. Yet, as we have long proposed, the Gandhian concept of “satyagraha” offers a viable path towards some other orientation for living on earth, an orientation based in […]

The Point of Publishing

What can publishers do in the time of climate emergency? Climate breakdown and mass species extinction now pose a threat to human life on earth. All human culture is affected, including publishing. What can publishers – often slow in reacting to change – do in the race to salvage what will remain of human agency […]

TOWN HALL SKETCH: Who are we to believe? The last full council meeting until October descended into accusations from politicians of lying (ahh, the sweet irony), while the public’s petitions were re-written for them by council officials, until debate was ended when the Labour leader decided that he wanted to go down the pub. It […]
