Anime Rants

Fairy Gone is a good anime. It doesn’t have the smoothest narrative, and not everyone likes the characters or finds the story concepts interesting. However, Fairy Gone presents what I believe is a much more original and less predictable story than some other hit anime series of the season/year. The world lore of the fairies, […]

Following Ferg

Last week I wrote an article about the short fallings of the new Glasgow Warriors logo. Largely, the feedback on the article was positive and people could understand my take on the new look but the thing that seemed to sting everyone was my praise for the Edinburgh Rugby 2018 rebrand. I figured an explanation […]

CHEAP glass jars are super handy for so many different things – they’re practically a kitchen staple. Whether you want them for storing dry goods, like flour and sugar, or for preserving pickles, jams and jellies, there’s a glass jar out there to suit your purpose. If it’s food you’re looking to store in the jar, think about what you need from it – if you’re pickling vegetables you’ll need a jar with a larger capacity, for example, whereas sugar or lentils won’t need such a big container. If it’s for liquids, you’ll need an air-tight lid with a seal and you’ll probably want it to be dishwasher safe if they’re in constant use. Then there’s the storage space – if you’re stuck for room, a stacking set might be your best choice, or just one or two jars rather than a set of six. You might just want your jars for decoration rather than storing foodstuffs, either for your home, garden, a wedding or party. Glass jars look great filled with battery-powered fairy lights and dotted about on tables or on steps, or why not use them as vases with a length of lace wrapped around them or spray-painted gold? Come Christmas you can also use them to make your own snow globes. See, we told you they’re versatile! They’re also great for giving as gifts, filled with soaps, candles or foodstuffs. Choose a plain glass jar for these and add your own label for a homemade touch. We’ve rounded up six of the cheapest glass jars available, with an option to suit every everyone, no matter how strict your budget. 1. Korken jar Korken jar with lid Korken jar with lid, £2.50 for a pack of three, Ikea – buy here Whether you’re storing jams, jellies or something else, these jars have an aroma-tight seal, so they’re great for preserving. At just 7cm each in height and width, they’re a nice compact size and you get three of them in the set so they’re pretty good value, if we do say so ourselves. 2. KitchenCraft Homemade Pickling Jar KitchenCraft Homemade Pickling Jar KitchenCraft Homemade Pickling Jar, £5.99, Amazon – buy here If you’re after a decent-sized glass jar for preserving homemade pickles, onions and relishes, then look no further than this roomy traditional design. With a 2.25-litre capacity, it features a brushed-steel twist-off lid for easy access when the contents need topping up or you fancy reaching in for the contents. It’s hand-wash only, but the large size makes it ideal for those larger vegetables like cucumbers or cabbage, as well as non-pickled ingredients such as flour and pulses. 3. Screw-top jars Screw-top jars Screw-top jars, £6 for a set of six, Dunelm – buy here Simple, durable and dishwasher safe, these glass jars come in a set of six with screw-top lids. And, at £6 for the set, that makes each jar just £1 each – cheap as chips, right? They aren’t the largest containers out there, with each jar holding a 156ml capacity, but they’re still a decent size and a great value price. 4. Faceted jar Faceted jar Faceted jar, £12.99 for a set of three, Wayfair – buy here The Kilner jar is a design classic that was first introduced back in the 1840s, and this updated version benefits from an airtight clip top, which is guaranteed to keep foods fresher for longer. This jar comes as part of a set of three and we love the faceted detail as it gives it a vintage look. The jars are each 18cm in height and not suitable for dishwashers. 5. Glass Clip Lid Jar Glass Clip Lid Jar Glass Clip Lid Jar, £6 for a set of three, George Home – buy here Store your cereals or dry goods in this set of three jars from George Home, safe in the knowledge the clip-close lid will keep the contents fresh. The jars are 21cm in height each and hold 1.5 litres, so make a decent sized addition to your kitchen. 6. Kilner Stackable Storage Jar Set Kilner Stackable Storage Jar Set Kilner Stackable Storage Jar Set, £9.99 for a set of three, Dobbies – buy here Okay, it’s another set of three, but these ones are slightly different in that they’re stackable, so great if worktop or storage space is tight. You’ll get one 0.9-litre jar, which comes with the clip top and sits on top, plus two 0.88-litre jars which both have push tops. They have the usual Kilner logo to the front and despite not being a big set of jars, we love their simplicity and cute stacking design.
