The main cat room at Sequoia Humane Society is now even cozier thanks to the work of staff members and the support of the community. “It’s a communal cat room, which means we will have more than one cat out at a time as long as they get along together,” said Nicole Bradley, executive director of the nonprofit, no-kill animal shelter at 6073 Loma Ave. in Eureka. “We made a few changes in the cat room over the last six months or so,” she said. “We’ve revamped the painting that’s in there. A very generous donor in this past year donated the funds for us to redo all the cat walks … so that they’re more easily sanitized, and we took all of the cat walks down and painted them.” The room — which also has kennels for each of the kitties — is adorned with a new sunflower mural painted by kennel staffer Emily Bobzien, as well as some cat decals and a few pieces of related art. There are also several climbing structures, a fenced-in outdoor area so cats can play and get some sun, lots of toys and myriad other types of enrichment, including a TV that (thanks to the donation last summer of a small streaming device) shows stimulating programming just for the felines. “The cats in the (cat) condos … love watching it, or we’ve got a big pillow under the TV and they’ll sit there and watch TV — birds or fish jumping … they love it,” Bradley said. Through grant funding, several adoptable cats are also receiving special training through the “Cat Pawsitive” program, which is part of the Jackson Galaxy Project aimed at improving the lives of animals at risk and for helping the people who care for them. Some of the cats at the shelter have already learned how to “high-five,” Bradley noted. “Two of our staff members and one of our really dedicated cat volunteers are going through … the program,” she said. Cinco de Meow A special fundraiser, “Cinco de Meow” is coming up for the Sequoia Humane Society. A portion of proceeds all day on May 4 and 5 at both Rita’s Margaritas and Mexican Grill — at 1111 Fifth St. in Eureka and 855 Eighth St. in Arcata — will go to the animal shelter. Hand-painted maraca will be sold to benefit Sequoia and there will be coloring books on hand. “Cinco de Meow” also kicks off a fundraising raffle for the shelter, featuring a family four-pack of Disneyland Hopper passes. The raffle takes place June 1. Angela, a 1-year-old spayed female feline, is curled up at the top of a climbing structure in the cat room at Sequoia Humane Society in Eureka. From Consortium News – Advertisement – As Donald Trump sharpens his re-election messaging, he has sought to make a foil out of freshman Democrat Rep.
