Looking Ahead in a Post-Millennial World

If congress wants to close down government for $2 billion when the shut down may cost a substantial portion of that each day, go for it. President Trump should get at least $2 billion for building a wall now and more later. Tens of millions of people want the wall built. McConnell shouldn’t grinch them for Christmas.

Welcome back to the Wednesday Grab Bag. We only have two weeks left in this hellscape known as 2018 and the craziest part, aside from The Olympics happening this year (roughly 124 years ago), is that there was not a Stanley Cup champion. Anyway, the Pens head to DC tonight to take on the Caps. […]

Alfonso Cuaron is the frontrunner to win the Best Director Golden Globe for “Roma,” but don’t be surprised if it’s Bradley Cooper (“A Star Is Born”) who ends up on that stage. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association often can’t resist an actor-turned-director. The HFPA loves above-the-title names, so it’s not surprising that it’s given directing Globes to eight matinee stars who stepped behind the camera — and three times to one of them. They are: 1. Paul Newman, “Rachel, Rachel” (1968) 2. Robert Redford, “Ordinary People” (1980) 3. Warren Beatty, “Reds” (1981) 4. Barbra Streisand, “Yentl” (1983) 5. Clint Eastwood, “Bird” (1988), “Unforgiven” (1992), “Million Dollar Baby” (2004) 6. Kevin Costner, “Dances with Wolves” (1990) 7. Mel Gibson, “Braveheart” (1995) 8. Ben Affleck, “Argo” (2012) SEE Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga could end 40-year drought at the Golden Globes with their acting wins In terms of how this translates to Oscar success, it’s all or nothing with these Globe champs. Redford, Beatty, Eastwood twice (“Unforgiven,” “Million Dollar Baby”), Costner and Gibson went on to win the Best Director Oscar. Newman, Streisand — the category’s only female winner — Eastwood (“Bird”) and Affleck failed to get an Oscar nomination. Of the four snubbees, Affleck’s film had the best Oscar run, winning three awards, including Best Picture, ensuring Affleck would take home an Oscar as a producer. “A Star Is Born” is currently the Best Drama Film Golden Globe favorite and the Best Picture Oscar favorite, so if Cooper does nab the directing Globe, history suggests he’ll either win the directing Oscar too or get Affleck’d. But the HFPA has three chances to award Cooper, Best Drama Film and Best Drama Actor being the others, so voters could bypass him in directing completely. It wouldn’t be unlike George Clooney‘s run 13 years ago, when he won the Globe (and Oscar) for his supporting turn in “Syriana” and lost the directing Globe (and Oscar) for “Good Night, and Good Luck.” PREDICT the Golden Globes now; change as often as you like until Jan. 6 Be sure to make your Golden Globe predictions so that Hollywood insiders can see how their films and performers are faring in our odds. There are two radiant souls who were once called Nancy Patricia Taylor and Philip Michael Gibson. The woman took the man’s last name for her own, and the man took his middle name as his first, and thereby was the song of identity sung forevermore. On the 16th day of the month of October in […]

Well, for today, I thought that I’d talk about narration. Whilst most writers develop their own unique narrative styles, there’s also something to be said for adapting your style in order to fit the story that you’re telling – or even deliberately using a slightly different style for dramatic effect. For example, the novel I’m […]

Daily Fight Report

When they first clashed at UFC 165 back in 2013, it was an epic fight. And admittedly, challenger Alexander Gustafsson had given then-champ Jon Jones his toughest fight ever.
