Breaking down the precursor awards — both nominations and winners — as well as the top Oscar nominations by categories gives us 35 key categories that will determine the strongest Oscar contenders. This year’s counting had already started with nominations for the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice. Wednesday saw the the SAG Awards nominations, which have upended the race. “A Star is Born” and “BlacKkKlansman” join “Green Book” and “Vice” at the top with six ticks apiece after the latter two failed to make the cut for the cast prize at the SAG Awards. They did reap individual bids (Mahershala Ali  and Viggo Mortensen for “Green Book,” Amy Adams and Christian Bale for “Vice”) but that’s all. Likewise, “The Favourite” has three individual nominations (Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz) but not one for the cast. That put the film is in second place all by itself, with five boxes ticked. “Crazy Rich Asians,” which did well with one box ticked (ensemble) sits on three, while “Roma” is also stuck on three after being shut out by SAG. Next up are the PGA Awards nominations on Jan. 4.
