“Black Panther,” 2018’s highest-grossing film so far with a worldwide gross of $1.3 billion, stealthily continues to leave a trail of paw prints over the awards season landscape while making history for its genre along the way. Its latest prey?  The Screen Actors Guild Awards, which gave the pop-culture sensation its first-ever film ensemble nomination for a comic-book adventure. It took a spot that other more typical contenders as “Green Book,” “Vice,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” “Widows,” ”The Favourite” and “If Beale Street Can Talk” were denied. Rarely does a movie win an Oscar for Best Picture without this SAG counterpart. At the very least, however, “Black Panther” might be one step close to being the first superhero drama to compete in the most coveted Academy Award category, one that “The Dark Knight,” the acclaimed 2008 Batman blockbuster, was denied. The uproar over its omission led the Oscar overseers to eventually allow between five and 10 nominees for the top prize each year. SIGN UP for Gold Derby’s free newsletter with latest predictions While the Big O might be the ultimate goal, “Panther” also has been stalking other showbiz award lineups and breaking barriers. While 2017’s raunchily humorous “Deadpool,” also from Marvel comics, competed in the film comedy category at the 2018 Golden Globes, this fantasy about the hidden African kingdom of Wakanda that embraces real-world racial issues head-on just became the first superhero title to compete in the Globes’ drama category. Its song, “All the Stars,” and score are also nominated. The Critics’ Choice Awards, which are handed out by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, also went big for “Panther,” where it landed nods for Best Action Movie and Best Picture along with nine other  categories. SEE 2019 SAG Awards nominations: Full list of Screen Actors Guild Awards nominees But this Hollywood cat is also a multi-media sensation. Its soundtrack album, overseen by hip-hop artist Kendrick Lamar, earned eight nominations for the just-announced 2019 Grammys. It became just the second soundtrack to be up for Album of the Year in this century after “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” — which won the prize at the 2002 Grammys.  What would have been “Panther’s” main cinematic competition, “A Star Is Born,” didn’t release its soundtrack album in time to meet the deadline to qualify. All that is left to complete “Panther’s” journey, save for the ultimate goal — the  Oscars — is recognition by the guilds, writers, directors and producers.  Gold trinkets are fine, but industry respect for an achievement that has raised the artistic bar on superhero sagas is also to be treasured.
