A Girl and Her Travels

You’ll probably be surprised to hear this, but: I am practically a Florida local. You may be asking, “Do you live there?” or “Were you born there?” and my answers to those questions is no. However, one crazy thing to admit is: I have visited Florida seventeen times in my life. Seventeen times! I feel so at-home when I […]

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR News) The Roanoke County Board of Supervisors approved the 419 Town Center plans Tuesday to revitalize the Tanglewood Mall area. Some of the traffic improvements in the plan were already scheduled. Including streetscaping which would be improvements to the streets and signage. That could start as soon as next summer or next fall. But as far as new buildings and developments, those could take some time. The public hearing is underway for the 419 Town Center area near Tanglewood Mall. The acting director of planning Philip Thompson is going over the research and current plan @WFXRnews pic.twitter.com/uTKgyPGC33— Eric Pointer (@EricPointerWFXR) July 23, 2019 The 419 Town Center plan would turn the area into a mixed-use development, which means places for shopping, dining and living. “Seeing what Roanoke has to offer and the potential that’s just sitting there at Tanglewood Mall. It really is important to me to see that it grows,” said owner of Wine Gourmet Brian Powell. Although his business is outside of the project area, Powell says he would benefit from the success of the plans. “Mixed-use retail development with apartments upstairs and businesses downstairs, it makes it feel more like a community where someone can go. And it’s not to say that we wouldn’t move the store up there or put another store up there if that was the case and it came to fruition,” Powell said. Acting Planning Director Philip Thompson says this plan is a blueprint, and now leaders will work to see how to make it a reality, but this is just the beginning. “I think people see the draws and the renderings and think, ‘Wow, this is going to happen tomorrow,” said Thompson. Thompson says they have to work with developers and property owners to design the new mixed-use space. “It’s going to be a 20 plus, almost 30-year plan. and things will change,” said Thompson. Thompson says making the area ADA compliant has also been a priority in planning. “We think it’s important that all people have access to this town center. it needs to be where you can safely move around no matter what your state or condition,” Thompson said. Thompson says in about 5-10 years they’ll review the plan and make necessary changes. But he’s excited that the plan has been approved and they can start working on it.

Talking Bollocks

It’s said that Britain will fall if the Ravens leave the Tower of London but an early indicator of demise may be punks at Piccadilly Circus. Since the 70s Piccadilly Circus was the place for Punks to parade and spit at passers by. Today there are no punks at Piccadilly Circus. Not one. Instead there is some idiot doing a “street act”. It’s American cultural imperialism. I love New York but I don’t want everywhere to be New York. Fuck street acts. They take up pavement space and they attract tourists.
