Theresa May has chosen Mel Stride as the new Commons leader (Picture: PA/ Reuters) Theresa May has appointed former Treasury minister Mel Stride as the new leader of the House of Commons. The Prime Minister was forced to act following the resignation of Andrea Leadsom from the cabinet last night. The South Northamptonshire MP said she was ‘proud’ to have served in Theresa May’s Government since 2016, and had stayed in the Cabinet to ‘shape and fight for Brexit’ despite some ‘uncomfortable compromises along the way’. But she added that she did not believe the UK will be ‘truly sovereign’ through May’s proposed deal, and said a second referendum would be ‘dangerously divisive’. Speaking outside her home this morning, she told Sky News: ‘I felt I couldn’t in all conscience stand up and deliver the business statement today with the Withdrawal Agreement Bill in it, that I couldn’t support elements of. She said: ‘I do not agree with you that the deal which we have negotiated with the European Union means that the United Kingdom will not become a sovereign country.’ Stride has been an MP for Central Devon since 2010.
