December 10: Nothing out of the ordinary except that I had a lovely dinner with my friends and we chatted for two hours-good break from uni. I also only have onions and peppers left for vegetables to go in my morning scramble, and accidentally put too many onions in the scramble-it did not taste good. […]

This is my yearly summation/recommendations with a link to each winery by clicking on the winery name. I believe whole heartily and stand by these picks, as I […]

And so we’re getting ever closer to the end of this long Suicide Squad run. #49 is the second chapter of “Rocket to Russia,” and the second-to-last chapter in the entire series. As I read this, I just find myself wondering what happened to this book. Back when Williams started out with Jim Lee as […]

Hunting was considered a tourist activity to many international hunters and a source of income for the local communities. In the recent years, it was discovered that international hunters were the root cause in the increase in […]

[cq comment=”Holiday Fun through the New Year in Central, East Contra Costa “]Even after Santa has delivered the goods, holiday fun can continue into till New Year’s Day and beyond. Whether enjoying outdoor winter weather or spending time warmly inside, Central and East Contra Costa still offer lots of holiday cheer through the start of next year. There’s still time to ice-skate before the rinks disappear. Big Chill Brentwood, in the Streets of Brentwood, boasts the largest outdoor ice rink in Northern California. It’s added a Lil’ Chill rink this year and extends the fun with Brentwood Bears skating aids, an indoor Ice Lodge and the Big Chill Café. Brentwood on Ice is downtown Brentwood’s first ice rink and offers unlimited sessions depending on skate availability, a snack bar, and a choice of a skate buddy or skate helper. Walnut Creek on Ice promises fun for all ages and levels of skaters on a smooth, brightly lit rink festooned in neon-colored lights and holiday decorations. Skate on your own or aided by a glider while an upbeat playlist adds to the fun. Combining history with fun is a snap at three Contra Costa sites. John Muir National Historic Site in Martinez preserves the Victorian residence and part of the fruit ranch where the naturalist Muir lived from 1890 to 1914. Visitors can view a film at the Visitor Center, wander orchards and the family gravesite and explore Mount Wanda, where Muir hiked with his daughters. “People can tour the site whenever they want, but every day at 2 p.m. we offer a house tour,” said Jessica Sloan, a ranger at the Muir historic site. “The highlight is getting to know about this site and ringing the bell in the bell tower. My personal favorite in the house is John Muir’s “scribble den,” where he did the majority of his work and helped create the national park service.” In Antioch, Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve combines 6,000 acres of open space and wildlife among remains of coal and sand mining history. Indoors there’s the Sidney Flat Visitor Center with photographs and artifacts, and at the Greathouse Visitor Center, located in an underground chamber, visitors can learn about how miners lived and view the workings of a sand mine. Explore outdoors with a stroll in Rose Hill Cemetery with its remains of many Welsh coal-mining families or a hike along 65 miles of trails. At Old Borges Ranch in Walnut Creek it’s easy to step back and get a sense of how people lived on a farm in the late 19th century. Walk among the Borges family home, barns, corrals, outbuildings, blacksmith shop, antique farm equipment and farm animals, then head down to the Patrick Hanna Grove Picnic Area and Bob Pond and cross into East Bay Regional Park District land and hike to formations known as Castle Rock in the Mount Diablo foothills. There’s fun to be had on or near the water. Antioch’s Delta Kayaking Adventures offers kayak and paddleboard rentals, classes, sunset paddles to view wildlife and fishing tours. Owner and operator Kathy Bunton describes winter kayaking as ideal, especially in the Dow Wetlands. “Winter is a chance to paddle in calmer conditions, enabling paddlers to enjoy some quiet time on the water and experience nature in our own backyard,” she said. “In the Dow Wetlands, beginners and experts can view many species of birds, river otters frolicking together or hunting for a meal and sometimes beaver spotted along with sea lions and seals.” Lafayette Reservoir draws crowds all year long for all manner of outdoor fun. There’s a children’s playground and picnic tables with barbecues; rowboats, pedal boats and kayaks can be rented at the Visitor Center and EBMUD plants trout for lucky fishermen. Hikers and joggers can choose between the paved Lakeside Nature Trail and longer Rim Trail. The holiday season brings a special attraction to the reservoir. “Christmas is a time of giving, fellowship and bringing ornaments to decorate the purple-leaf plum tree at Lafayette Reservoir,” said Jay Lifson, the executive director of the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce. “For about two decades, dog walkers, joggers and baby strollers have been bringing ornaments to adorn the plum tree on the Rim Trail on the far side of the reservoir.” Kids of all ages love fun rides and getting rid of energy. Two Contra Costa sites fill that bill. Concord’s Pixieland Amusement Park has free admission and parking. Tickets must be purchased to produce smiles and giggles riding the Pixieland Express, tea cups, windy grove cars, froghopper, dragon roller coaster, antique carousel and more. Make time to savor the selection of food and beverages at Kids Café, including corn dog, chili cheese dogs, Popcornopolis products and snow cones. Brentwood has the ultimate facility for combining exercise and fun and burning off energy. At Rockin’ Jump Trampoline Park kids can soar in open jump areas, play trampoline dodge ball, do flips and somersaults or enjoy the open jump area, X-beam, dodge ball area, slam dunk zone, vertical ops and stunt bag arena. From Brentwood to Lamorinda, there’s plenty of holiday cheer on tap well into January.
