S I P [Social Interactions and Parties]

Each year as we ease into the month of May, the stores are suddenly cleared of Easter candies and décor, immediately replaced with gifts and cards for graduations and Mother’s Day.  One year the void of not having my Mom for Mother’s Day struck me.  The memories of planning something special to do with her for the holiday that I hoped she would enjoy was sorely felt.

The fateful night of 16th December, 2012, a horrific event conspired on the streets of Munirka, in the South District of the national capital of India; an event that sent shock waves, breaking the stupor of a nation that was until then, more or less oblivious to the ghastly truth and the sad state of affairs […]

LOOKING for the ideal short-break family staycation can often be testing. But the picturesque and action-packed Test Valley in Hampshire more than covered our checklist of requirements. The Hampshire resort is ideal With our two excitable girls — Maria and Mirrin — to keep entertained, my wife Ellie and I thought the excellent choice of top-notch family attractions in the area looked a surefire winner. Our base for our trip to England’s south coast was the charming Best Western Chilworth Manor Hotel — with its state-of-the-art health club and spa — in the town of Chilworth, just outside Southampton. After settling into our luxurious suite, we took a stroll through the vast hotel grounds before heading off to nearby North Baddesley for an Italian feast at the local Bella Vita. Britain’s most bizarre museums revealed – including a POO exhibition and a shrine to pencils That set us up nicely for our first family adventure — the fabulous Hawk Conservancy Trust park. This modern and cleverly laid-out attraction is an excellent way to get up close and personal to some of the world’s most beautiful birds of prey. Maria was particularly taken with the Caracar, which we got to see in action during the afternoon’s flying display. It also kept us entertained by running round in circles and stealing clothes from a washing line! The display also showcased Snowy Owls, Merlin Falcons, majestic Vultures and a kettle of Black Kites all showing off their gravity-defying aerobatics. There’s fun for the whole family The girls were tasked with rummaging through the park hunting down info relating to different birds of prey and finding the related stamps to claim a prize. We then headed into the Feathers café for hot chocolate before the Grand Finale of our visit — our chance to ‘Meet the Burrowers’. We were led into an aviary, where we shared the space with the resident owls. They are very curious little things and think nothing of coming over and landing on your hand, knee, camera or even head. If there was a perch they’d land on it. It certainly delivered an experience that will not be forgotten. A short drive and we were at the Mottisfont Estate, an 18th Century house set in acres of countryside, run by the National Trust. It had something for everyone. We were taken with the fascinating history of the last owner, society hostess Maud Russell, who included celebrities such as Sir Ian Fleming of James Bond fame in her list of visitors. [boxout headline=”GO: HAMPSHIRE”] MORE INFO: The Test Valley is named after the longest river with an international reputation for fly fishing. There are quintessential English villages, meadows and chalk downlands. Enjoy a great range of attractions, historic houses and gardens and places to stay. See testvalley.gov.uk/communityandleisure/tourism [/boxout] After donning their welly boots the kids had a great time in the masses of outdoor space before visiting the Laughter and Landscapes exhibition by one of Britain’s most popular cartoonists, Norman Thelwell. After the afternoon’s exertions, it was a unanimous decision that a visit to Mottisfont Old Kitchen café was in order. Later, back at Chilworth Manor, we tucked into a fantastic evening meal before finally collapsing for an excellent night’s sleep. The next morning we checked out and set off for our next destination, the magnificent Sir Harold Hillier Gardens. The world-famous attraction, set in over 180 acres of rolling Hampshire countryside, was established by Sir Harold in 1953 and boasts one of the most comprehensive plant collections in the world. The girls were given an early spring I-Spy sheet and as we journeyed through the Winter Garden, Himalayan Valley and Bog Garden, it all became rather competitive. Maria and Mirrin made the most of the huge treehouse, with its slides and climbing walls (to be fair we all made the most of the treehouse) before discovering the outdoor musical instruments and finishing off with an assault course at Hilltop Adventure. No early spring nature walk would be complete without some coffee and cake at the café before it was time to hit the road. [article-rail-section title=”MOST READ IN TRAVEL” posts_category=”33″ posts_number=”6″ query_type=”popular” /] The kids didn’t want the trip to end. I felt the same. Two days was just not enough time to see and experience all the delights the Test Valley has to offer. It won’t be long until we’ll be back — so expect a sequel. Ms. F Writes

One thing I really enjoy about the writing is that, because of the very different personalities and lives these two women lead, it never feels repetitive. For example, a part of the book takes place in Venice, you have chapters from Villanelle’s POV, and then you have Eve retracing her steps, and yet it feels new.
