RIVERSIDE >> Almost a year removed from falling short in last year’s final, the Chaminade girls basketball team was not going to let another precious opportunity go to waste, especially junior Alexis Whitfield. This slideshow requires JavaScript. “We spoke about it all week,” Whitfield said. “Coming so far last year and losing by one point. No way it was going to happen again.” Whitfield wasn’t just thinking it, she played like it. The standout junior scored 24 points, including the go-ahead basket with eight seconds left to anchor Chaminade’s 52-49 victory over ML King of Riverside in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 final at Cal Baptist University Saturday afternoon. Chaminade carried the lead until King’s 11-0 run in the fourth quarter, which was led by crafty point guard Alexis Mead. Mead hit a 3 right in front of her team’s bench to give the Wolves a 42-40 lead with just over four minutes to play. “We called timeout. We knew we had to draw up a great play,” DiMuro said. The Eagles went to Whitfield. She converted on a three-point play before senior Leslie Hunter connected on a 3-pointer to spark an 8-0 run. Minutes later, Mead would strike from downtown again, one of her five 3s (23 points) for the game. But it was Whitfield’s heroics that would prove to be the winning recipe Saturday night. With four seconds left, Chaminade junior Maiya Jackson made two free throws that helped extend the lead. It was plays like that, that showed Chaminade was much more comfortable on the big stage. That kind of flair in playing style usually comes from watching a favorite NBA player, but not for Whitfield. “I don’t watch basketball,” she said with an embarrassed chuckle.. “I watch a lot film. But I really like to look off my teammates because it throws off the defense.” The win avenged last March’s 46-45 loss to West Torrance in the Division 1 final, and marked the program’s fourth CIF sectional title since 2013, all under DiMuro. The Eagles have also won two CIF State titles in that span, too.
