ISSA BAH killed off a remarkable Cork City comeback in Luxembourg. Goals from Garry Buckley and Conor McCarthy had the teams tied at 2-2 on aggregate before 17-year-old striker Bah popped up in the 68th minute to send Progres Niederkorn through. The Rebels did not do enough to return from their defeat in the first leg The sucker punch means John Cotter’s side now miss out on a money-spinning tie with Steven Gerrard’s Rangers in the next round. Already two goals down from last week’s first leg in Turner’s Cross, Cork needed a minor miracle to go through. And they got off to the perfect start when Buckley’s superb left-footed volley from Karl Sheppard’s knock-down on a Colm Horgan cross put them in front after just three minutes. Buckley almost made it 2-0 shortly after when he had a free-kick on the edge of the box deflected wide. MISSED OPPORTUNITIES Sebastien Thill then went close for the home side but he fired straight at Mark McNulty after 20 minutes. Joel Coustrain was next to try his luck but he was denied by Progres goalkeeper Sebastian Flauss’ outstretched leg and skipper Sheppard sent the rebound wide. Inside a minute of the restart, Cork were level when Daire O’Connor’s cross was headed home by McCarthy. But City could not hold out and their Europa League hopes were dashed by a sublime finish from substitute Bah. Kevin O’Connor had a chance at the death from a free-kick but he could not keep his effort down. City boss Cotter admitted the result was tough to take. A GOOD PERFORMANCE He said: “All the lads are gutted in there in the away dressing room. “But we certainly restored our pride in a big way because it was one of our best performances in European football in a long time. “I am immensely proud of my team but we just came up short and that’s the hard part. “I felt we dominated the game, created the better chances and might have finished the job on another night. “The players gave me everything and more, but in hindsight, I suppose we lost it overall back at Turner’s Cross last week and that’s the galling part. “We could have been more ahead at half-time but having said that, it was a great finish by their substitute to win the tie and we wish them well in the next round against Rangers.” SUN STAR MAN: Ronan Hurley (Cork City).
