Well hello! (Picture: BBC) Arriving in Holby City reception with an unconscious man slung over his shoulder was quite a memorable way for new surgeon Kian Madani (Ramin Karimloo) to make his debut. It was almost as dramatic as when Matteo Rossini arrived on a horse, and in many ways Mr Rossini and Mr Madani are similar. They’re both charming, oozing with confidence and have a winning way with the women. We’d already seen this latter quality of Kian’s in the opening scenes. He’d met Essie (Kaye Wragg) in Albie’s the night before. He told her he was a Navy SEAL called Max Blaze. She told him she was called Veronica and worked as cabin crew. The evening presumably progressed from there and the next morning a hungover Essie was waiting for a cup of much-needed coffee at Pulses when who should walk in but ‘Max.’ And he was carrying a patient and asking where Darwin was because he was already late. Embarrassing. Jac (Rosie Marcel) had apparently already decided she was going to employ Kian. She knew him from way back, she told Hanssen (Guy Henry). She wasn’t very pleased when the first thing he did was to do a bit of on-the-fly heart surgery on the ward while she was busy scrubbing up. Like Matteo Rossini we can label him as (a) an excellent surgeon and (b) a bit of a maverick. The patient he was saving accused him of trying to steal his car, and I’m not sure we ever did really get to the bottom of what happened in the car park the night before, but Jac has agreed that Kian can stay. She’ll be keeping a close eye on him. Possibly not as close as Nicky, who was hilariously impressed by the new guy. ‘He makes people feel better, feel liked,’ she told Jac. ‘And he smells amazing.’ Belinda Owusu was really funny throughout the episode. Carole Copeland (Julia Deakin) was starting a new job as a receptionist at a lovely new Wyvern Wing reception desk that seems to have been purpose-built for her. Dominic (David Ames) spotted her as she was taking post up to the ward for Ange (Dawn Steele) and he was not happy. Carole is so nice and radiates love towards Dominic, but he’s so angry with her that he was being quite horrible. Ange could see what was happening and it hurt her to think she was partly the cause of it. Carole was about to quit her job, but Ange (inspired by a conversation with a patient, as so often happens) persuaded her not to. She thought Dominic needed both of them: ‘It’s where you and I both meet – right in the middle.’ Ange has a lot on her mind (Picture: BBC) Dom discovered that Ange had been making plans to go on holiday to Iceland with Chloe (Amy Lennox), and his feeling of rejection that he wasn’t fully included as part of Ange’s family made him almost tell Chloe the truth. Someone is going to have to tell her soon, though, because she knows something is wrong. We did find out about Dominic’s biological father, who was apparently a boy Ange met on the way to a Wham! concert at Wembley. He doesn’t even know Dominic exists. Despite Ange’s efforts, Carole was left in tears when Dominic turned down her offer of fish pie and left the building with his biological mother. It’s a really sad story and Dominic isn’t coping well. It seems that he hasn’t even told Lofty what’s going on, and when Lofty called him he threw down his phone and smashed it. Zav’s hoping Sue doesn’t get the job (Picture: BBC) The brilliant Scary Sue from ITU (Angela Lonsdale) was back, this time on AAU because she always has to work somewhere that rhymes with her name. Sue has a down-to-earth way with her that is otherwise completely lacking in the somewhat refined corridors of Holby. ‘I’ve never much cared for London,’ she told a patient. ‘It makes me bogies go black.’ Xavier (Marcus Griffiths) wasn’t happy to hear that Sue had applied for a job as Matron. ‘If Scary Sue gets it I’m going to resign,’ he told Donna (Jaye Jacobs), who thought she might have a go at getting the job herself. Once again Sue showed that she isn’t really scary – in fact for all her talk of her lovely fiancé and upcoming wedding I couldn’t help wondering if it was all real or just wishful thinking. She’s also good with patients, observant and kind. After a day working alongside her Donna realised that Sue probably needed (or deserved) the Matron job more than she did and told Serena (Catherine Russell) she didn’t want to be considered. Because Sue might not be scary, but Donna is definitely a darling. Sue Haasler is the author of the official Holby City book, which you can read about here. Her latest novel, Half A World Away, is out now
