“Roller coaster.” “Not responding.” “Up and down.” “Frustrated.” If  Gophers fans are getting sick of hearing those terms from Bob Motzko, rest assured the team’s first-year coach is getting plenty sick of uttering them. But after a sweep of one of the top teams in the nation last weekend on the road at Ohio State, the Gophers’ season-long roller coaster ride took another downward dip Friday. Colin Theisen scored his second goal of the game in the third period as Notre Dame rallied from an early two-goal deficit to beat the Gophers 3-2 in the opener of their weekend Big Ten series at 3M Arena at Mariucci. “We’ve done this before. You have a great weekend and then you come back, and that was a very poor effort by us tonight,” Motzko said. “I wish I had the answer for how you guard against playing really well and then totally having your foot off the pedal.” The Gophers (13-15-4, 10-10-3-0 Big Ten) had staked themselves a 2-0 lead in the opening period on goals by Brannon McManus and Nathan Burke, only to see it slip away. Mat Robson was busy in goal, making 28 saves in the loss. Theisen scored a power-play goal in the second period, and Cam Burke added an even-strength goal for the Irish (17-11-3, 10-9-2-2) who moved ahead of the Gophers into second place in the league standings. Notre Dame goalie Cale Morris finished with 24 saves. The loss was costly for the Gophers, who have just one conference game remaining and are in a pitched battle for the a second-, third- or fourth-place finish in the Big Ten, which would mean home ice in the first round of the playoffs. “You look at the conference standings and it shifts every night. You don’t know what to expect or where we’re going to finish,” Irish coach Jeff Jackson said. “You’ve got four or five teams fighting for home ice, so how do you figure out the Big Ten right now? I don’t know.” McManus, who missed all but one period of action last weekend’s sweep at Ohio State while dealing with an injury, announced his return to the lineup with authority early in the opening period. The Gophers were held to just one shot on their first power play, but with the teams at even strength, McManus made a sharp cut to the net. His shot was stopped by a Cale Morris pad save, but Irish defenseman Spencer Stastney inadvertently knocked the loose puck over the goal line while trying to clear it away. The high-flying freshman line, which has been on a tear for the past three games, clicked later in the first to double the Gophers lead. Blake McLaughlin got a puck through traffic along the near boards to Sammy Walker, who few Burke for a rising shot that caught the underside of the crossbar. It was the third goal in as many games for Burke, who was named the Big Ten’s top player of the week on Tuesday. “Everyone’s taken aback by it. We prepped hard all week, and I think everyone was trying to step up a little bit. Even in practice, guys were more lively,” said Burke, unable to explain the team’s power outage in the last 40 minutes. “No one really expected this, and we’re kind of running out of things to say at this point.” Rather than deflate the Irish, the early Gophers lead seemed to make them mad. The visitors responded with six unanswered shots on goal, and another that clanked the goalpost behind Robson before the period ended. When the Gophers took an early second period penalty, Notre Dame pounced and cut the lead in half with a power play goal on a sharp angle shot. The Irish tied the game late in the second on a tap-in by Burke after a pass from behind the net. “We caught them sleeping them a little bit early in the first period and got the lead, but from that point on, the second period was just awful,” Motzko said. “I’ve been very cautious all year long to air dirty laundry, but that was not how you play the game.” Theisen’s wrist shot from the high slot through a crowd was the game-winner as the Gophers’ brief two-game win streak was halted. [related_articles location=”right” show_article_date=”false” article_type=”automatic-primary-section”]“I saw the release and then it kind of went through a body. That one’s a little on me,” Robson said. “I saw it out of the corner of my eye…Tip your cap to the guy for a real nice shot under my glove and we’re just going to have to look to shut that play down tomorrow.” Gophers forward Rem Pitlick, who was denied by Morris on a third-period breakaway, saw his 13-game point streak snapped.
