A BENEFITS cheat who claimed she could barely walk was caught running with her dog at Crufts. Linda Avery, 57, was filmed exhibiting a collie at the world’s biggest canine show despite pocketing the highest rate of disability benefit, a court heard. Linda Avery was seen ‘running dogs around rings’ at Crufts – but found she couldn’t give DWP the same treatment Avery was also to another dog show where they filmed her lifting and preparing dogs for the ring She was paid more than £12,000 over nearly two years, despite not being entitled to the cash Avery does walk with a cane but had failed to inform the DWP about her improved agility The dog trainer’s condition had improved to such an extent she was able to “run dogs around rings” at the high-profile event. Investigators from the Department of Work and Pensions then tailed Avery to another dog show where they filmed her lifting and preparing dogs for the ring. She was paid more than £12,000 to which she was not entitled over nearly two years, Plymouth Crown Court heard. Avery, of Plymouth, Devon, who does walk with a stick, pleaded guilty to dishonestly failing to notify an improvement in her condition affecting her claim for Disability Living Allowance between October 2014 and July 2016. She was back at Plymouth Crown Court today to be sentenced and was given a 12 month community order. She was ordered by Judge James Townsend to carry out 20 rehabilitation activity days and 100 hours unpaid work. The court also heard the case will be subject to a proceeds of crime act hearing where the DWP will seek to reclaim the money Avery illegally acquired. The court heard that she started receiving the higher rate for DLA in late 2014. A probe is understood to have been launched after she posted a picture on Facebook of her showing a dog at Crufts. Investigators then filmed her exhibiting at Paignton Dog Show in Devon. The video – which has now been released by the DWP shows Avery brushing her dog while the pampered pooch stands on a table, before lifting it off and running around a paddock with the dog on a lead. Ali Rafati, for Avery, told the court his client was still receiving benefits. [article-rail-section title=”MOST READ NEWS” posts_category=”316″ posts_number=”6″ query_type=”popular” /] He said: “She failed to notify improvements in her health and that resulted her receiving the higher rate benefit to which she would not have been entitled.” Speaking after the case a DWP spokesman said: “Only a small minority of benefit claimants are dishonest, but cases like this show how we are catching those who cheat the system and divert taxpayers’ money from the people who need it. “We are determined to catch those we suspect of fraudulently claiming benefits by following up on tip-offs, undertaking surveillance and working with local councils.” [bc_video video_id=”6011337202001″ account_id=”5067014667001″ player_id=”default” embed=”in-page” padding_top=”56%” autoplay=”” min_width=”0px” max_width=”640px” width=”100%” height=”100%” caption=”World famous Crufts dog show begins four days of competition in Birmingham”] We pay for your stories!
