With less a month before conference play begins at Virginia Tech, Boston College certainly has some kinks to straighten out. Performances like Wednesday night’s certainly won’t fly against the giants of the ACC. For now, though, Eagles will take their hard lessons in stride with a win. Ky Bowman led the way with 24 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, Nik Popovic added 22 points off the bench in his return from a concussion, and Wynston Tabbs had 19 as BC overcame sloppy play  in a 82-73 victory over Columbia at Conte Forum. The Eagles (7-2) led for more than 90 percent of the game, but turnovers (11), missed free throws (16-for-26 from the line) and overall inconsistent play on defense allowed the Lions to stay within striking distance. Leading by four with 90 seconds to play, BC finally got the separation it needed to hold on for the victory. BC was without starting guard Jordan Chatman, who suffered a right ankle injury in practice and is day to day. He could return Sunday in a matinee against Fairfield. After Columbia went on a 8-0 run out of halftime to take the lead, BC responded to retake the lead and held it for most of the second half but never could quite put the Lions away. It looked like the Eagles might finally run away with it when Tabbs scored five consecutive points, including a 3-pointer that gave them a nine-point lead, but Columbia again responded. Some weak fouls committed by BC and good outside shooting allowed Columbia to stay in it as Ike Nweke and Patrick Tape each converted three-point plays to cut the Eagles lead to 60-56 with 8:06 to go. The Eagles answered again and Bowman’s 3-pointer with 2:41 left gave them a nine-point lead, and they did just enough down the stretch to preserve the win. BC led 14-11 early in the first half before it went on a run to create some separation. Bowman made a 3-pointer before Popovic, who was returning from missing a game due to a concussion, put in a layup. Hamilton capped a 7-1 spurt with a steal and layup, forcing a Columbia timeout. Hamilton took a hard fall moments later as he tried to finish an alley-oop — it was later ruled a Flagrant 1 foul on Columbia’s Rodney Hunter — and the freshman forward sank one of two free throws. On the ensuing BC possession, Hamilton continued to show toughness, corralling his own rebound on a layup miss before converting a three-point play. Hamilton’s dunk with 5:03 left in the first gave BC an 11-point lead, but the Lions stayed within striking distance. Patrick Tape’s layup cut the Eagles lead to six before Bowman canned back-to-back triples to give BC its largest lead of the half at 12 with 3:15 to go. Columbia, though, didn’t go away. The Lions went on a 7-1 run to end the half before going on an 8-0 run to begin the second half, taking their first lead on a jumper from Randy Brumant.
