The Dramatic Allied Arts Guild members celebrated their 55th year at the annual scholarship luncheon last month at the Long Beach Yacht Club. The theme was in the décor of black and pink, the colors of the organization, with beautiful table decor including pink satin chair bows. Included in the program were performances from the scholarship winners in dance, music and theater. The organization holds a fundraising event in each fall to provide scholarships for students of the arts at Long Beach City College, Cal State Long Beach and one Long Beach high school student (in conjunction with Musical Theatre West). The donations raised from this event provide scholarships for students majoring in the areas of art, dance, film, music and theater. These scholarships help students continue their education and keep alive the value of the arts. Scholarship winners included Mica Ramos, Gem Acabal, Aisha Bardge, Victor Ochoa, Melissa McCullagh and Carmella Casabella. The dance recipients, Bardge and Casabella, performed a hip-hop piece and a contemporary ballet piece that they each choreographed, to the delight of the attendees. Vocal artists McCullagah, Acabal and Ramos performed pieces from classical and musical theater genres, including McCullagah’s beautiful performance of “Think of Me” from Phantom of the Opera. Several students attributed their parents for inspiring them to pursue their dreams. Ochoa’s parents both played musical instruments: his dad, the guitar, and his mom, the saxophone. Now Ochoa plays clarinet, saxophone, tuba, piano and bassoon. Ramos surprised her mother by acknowledging the fondest memories of her childhood were of her mother singing show tunes throughout the house, which later helped to influence her love of musical theater. Four of the students also displayed their artwork for everyone to enjoy. Dramatic Allied Arts Guild membership has committed to continue providing scholarships to students in the arts as a way of giving back to the community, which they have been a part of throughout their lives. $38,000 was awarded in scholarships. Lesley Scheller remarked: “What made it fun for me was hearing the kids perform. And seeing their work displayed.” [related_articles location=”left” show_article_date=”false” article_type=”automatic-primary-tag”] Seen at the scene: President Bev Cook, Cathy Crane, Lesley Scheller, Kay Berg, Penny Wilds, Leslee Martin, Jane Haxton-Thomas, Marisa Autry, Lynn Danielson, Sandy Hollandsworth, Gail Meredith, Donna Yeske, Cyrus Jeannette-Parker, Paul Garman, Sam Chou, Shyra Compton, Bethany Price, Daron Sorg (donated decorations), Hal Mankau, Betty Hercus, Susan Townsend, Chris Burcham, Carolyn Nelson, Joan Hill, Janice Fischer, Barbara Wallace, Joyce Levinson, and Claire Kiika Long Beach Retired Teachers Association For more than 10 years, nonagenarian members have been honored at the Long Beach Retired Teachers Association’s  May meeting. The members are inspired by these 90-year-olds who continue supporting the group’s activities. President Julie Mendell introduced past President Becky Carroll, who has chaired the special annual celebration for several years. All of the 90-year-old members were acknowledged. Those attending were introduced and thanked for their dedication and continued interest. Frank and Jean Dayak, Roberta Hovland, Howard Genrich, Joyce McKelvey, Stella Unger, Bruce woods, Lois Zeldorf, and Gwen Ward received a beautiful live rose plant and a mylar balloon, reading “For a Special Person.” (From left) Becky Carroll, Howard Genrich, TATJANA, Nate Genrich, Julie Mendell, Jeannie Halliday, and Sonia Woitovich learning a dance step. (Courtesy of Long Beach Retired Teachers Association) Cynthia Clark’s table settings featured spring flowers with pastel-woven hats over blue table coverings, and the sounds of lovely piano music played by Connie Lu Berg waere the spring welcome for attendees. Following lunch, brief reports were given from membership chairs, Toni Tawzer and Janet Wilcox. They announced that $100 grants were awarded to two teachers in the Paramount Unified School District. These grants are applied to by teachers in the six school districts the group serves. Sandy Shelley presented a live floral plant to the lucky winners of the “volunteer hours” drawing: Karen Larson, Marnos Lelesi, Joyce Webster, Elaine Ballenger, and Sandy Shelley. Program Chairman Frank Dayak drew attention to the decorated stage while introducing entertainer Tatjana, the beautiful singer, dancer and actress. She presented a nonstop song-and-dance routine from popular Broadway shows. Her first change of costume went from “Now a Days” to”All that Jazz.” Throughout her presentations, the audience enjoyed the costume and hair changes before each song and dance. Some favorites included “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina,” ”Memory,” “I love Paris,” “The Man from La Mancha.” She invited all to join in song for “You Are My Sunshine.” Her closing song, “New York, New York,” earned her a standing ovation, as well as generous applause for Russell Geary, her talented accompanist and sound engineer.
