A look at a few minor 40-man roster transactions from Saturday… The Phillies moved reliever David Robertson from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day version, clearing space for fellow righty J.D. Hammer’s promotion. Robertson went to the IL on April 15, so this shift means he’ll be out until at least mid-June. While Robertson […]

PITTSBURGH — Corey Seager visited his old home Saturday night. With Justin Turner out of the Dodgers lineup, Seager moved up to third in the batting order. It was only the second time since May 7 that Seager had batted higher than fifth. Through his first three seasons with the Dodgers, Seager was a fixture at the top of the lineup, usually batting second, occasionally third. But Dodgers manager Dave Roberts dropped him in the lineup hoping it would lessen the pressure on Seager who has struggled since returning from elbow and hip surgeries. “I wouldn’t say it hurt,” Seager said Saturday. “It was one of those things where it definitely takes you out of some pressure spots sometimes. That’s something that can be beneficial at times. I was struggling so it definitely didn’t hurt. “But you’re still working and you know you’re going to get pitched the same way.” Seager was batting .234 with a .690 OPS when Roberts made the change. He was batting .233 with a .693 OPS going into Saturday’s game. But an RBI single in the first inning Saturday and an RBI double in the fifth — batting third — gave him 11 RBI in 13 games since moving lower in the order. He had 11 in his first 37 games. And Roberts sees that as progress. “I think moving to the middle of the order — 5, 6 — allows him to hit with guys on base,” Roberts said. “I think that makes him a better hitter, more selective. And I think that’s what’s happened. Being able to make a productive out and drive in a run without getting a hit. But I do see with Corey, the in-zone swing is much better. Swinging at strikes, taking balls. Taking walks when they’re given to him. “And mechanically, it’s coming. I’m not worried about Corey.” That is not the first time Roberts has said that about Seager this season. But Seager has only shown brief flashes of recapturing the level of production he routinely had before the dual surgeries last year. “I have (said that before). I have,” Roberts acknowledged. “But I don’t think I appreciated, we appreciated missing five months of the season. That 100-at-bat barometer that people use might be 175. But I see good things with Corey.” TURNER OUT Turner stole second base in the first inning of Friday’s game and seemed to aggravate the shin injury he suffered in Cincinnati eight days ago. Roberts said that was “a sign” that Turner needed some more time off. He pulled him from the final three innings of Friday’s 10-2 win and kept him out of the starting lineup Saturday. “It started with the ball off the shin (in Cincinnati),” Roberts said. “Then in Tampa, the dirt got him a little bit as far as just being hard. His body just doesn’t feel right. Like anything, whether it’s the ball off the shin, (if) you compensate then it can be a knee or a hamstring on the other leg.” Roberts said the down time was “injury prevention” and he expects Turner to be back in the starting lineup Sunday. BAEZ DOWN Reliever Pedro Baez has not pitched since taking a line drive off his right knee on Tuesday. X-rays were negative but Roberts said he wanted to continue to “try to stay away from him” Saturday night. Baez did throw approximately 15 pitches off the bullpen mound Friday afternoon and “said he felt fine,” according to Roberts. Still, the manager wasn’t convinced. “I just didn’t see him really let it loose yesterday,” Roberts said. “What we don’t want is for him to compensate and affect the arm. It just wasn’t quite there yesterday, for my eyes.” PITCHING CONSULTANT The Dodgers have hired former major-league pitching coach Jim Hickey as a consultant in player development. Hickey, 57, has been a pitching coach with the Houston Astros, Tampa Bay Rays and, most recently, the Chicago Cubs. He resigned from the job with the Cubs last fall after just one season, citing personal reasons. Hickey will work with pitchers in the Dodgers’ farm system including at their academy in the Dominican Republic. CLOSE TORONTO — All the risks Toronto Raptors president Masai Ujiri took proved worthwhile. Trading for Kawhi Leonard and Marc Gasol, sacrificing depth, signing Kyle Lowry to a three-year in 2017, replacing Dwane Casey after last season with first-time NBA head coach Nick Nurse — all worth it for the Raptors. Toronto reached the NBA Finals for […]
