So after catching up on all the awards season favourites and others I missed over the last 12 months, my ultimate summation of 2018 in cinema overall is that it was…a mixed bag. I mean, there were some absolute gems this year, but filling out this list with worthy candidates was a lot harder than […]

Two philosophers of science diagnose our age of fake news. I can’t see them. Therefore they’re not real.” From which century was this quote drawn? Not a medieval one. The utterance emerged on Sunday from Fox & Friends presenter Pete Hegseth, who was referring to … germs. The former Princeton University undergraduate and Afghanistan counterinsurgency […]

Today, I was given a fresh reminder as to why we cannot sit quietly and expect the racism embedded in society to simply go away. Recently and unrelated to today, I made a commitment to myself to stop softening the blows racism deals to humanity. I refuse to use “racially something,” for example, like racially-tinged, racially […]

By Gabriella Borter | Reuters Two men being questioned in connection with an alleged racist and homophobic assault on “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett in Chicago are potential suspects in the alleged crime, the city’s police department said on Friday. Authorities had previously said only that the pair, whose names have not been released, were persons of interest after they were recognized from surveillance camera footage taken in the area where Smollett said two men shouted slurs at him and put a rope around his neck on Jan. 29. “Detectives have probable cause that they may have been involved in an alleged crime and we are working to corroborate the allegations and investigative timeline as our investigation continues,” police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement. [dfm_iframe src=”https://apps.mercurynews.com/newsletters-signup/?campaign=morning-report” width=”100%” height=”220px” allowfullscreen=”yes” scrolling=”yes” /] He has denied a media report on Thursday that said officers were investigating whether Smollett staged the attack because he was being written out of the television show. “While we haven’t found any video documenting the alleged attack, there is no evidence to say that this is a hoax. The alleged victim is being cooperative at this time and continues to be treated as a victim, not a suspect,” Guglielmi said on Friday. News of the alleged attack on Smollett, a 36-year-old openly gay African-American who plays a gay character on the hip-hop drama “Empire,” caused uproar on social media, but some have doubted Smollett’s account. In an interview with “Good Morning America” that aired on Thursday, Smollett said he was angry that some people questioned his story, and he suggested the disbelief might come from racial bias. [related_articles location=”left” show_article_date=”false” article_type=”curated” curated_ids=”5876215,5851352,5847441,5843174″]The two men questioned by police know Smollett from working on “Empire” and were picked up at Chicago O’Hare International Airport on Wednesday after returning from Nigeria where they were visiting family, their lawyer Gloria Schmidt told Chicago TV station CBS2. Schmidt could not be immediately reached for comment on Friday. Twentieth Century Fox Television, the producer of “Empire” released a statement on Thursday saying the idea that Smollett has been, or would be, written out of the show was “patently ridiculous,” and that they continue to stand behind him.

Kamfers Dam is a sizeable waterbody located just outside the diamond-mining town of Kimberley, in the dry Northern Cape Province of South Africa. Despite its name, it isn’t a dam at all. As Colorado’s spring training gets underway in Arizona this week, confidence is high within Salt River that the Rockies are equipped to not only make the playoffs for a third straight season, but also take a step further when they get there. But what do the oddsmakers say about all that confidence, one which underscores the World Series aspirations at 20th and Blake? SuperbookUSA by Westgate Las Vegas pegs the Rockies at 30/1 odds to claim their first title in 2019, and 15/1 odds to win their second National League pennant. Meanwhile, BetOnline has Colorado at 25/1 odds to win the World Series, Sportsbook.Ag has Colorado pegged at 40/1 and Bovada is giving the Rockies an 18/1 chance. If recent history is any indication, Colorado will find a way to get to October once again. Per Sports Odds History, the Rockies have proven Las Vegas wrong three seasons in a row with their record, including last year when their 91-72, wild-card campaign bested the oddsmakers’ 81.5-win prediction. Whether Colorado can beat the Las Vegas odds come October is another question altogether, especially after a quiet offseason has left much to be proven on the diamond this spring. — Kyle Newman, The Denver Post Must-Read Colorado Rockies Nolan Arenado looks on from the dugout as the Rockies played host to the Dodgers at Coors Field on Sept. 9, 2018 in Denver.
