A BOOK of condolence has been opened in Letterkenny for a dad-of-five who died in a horror rally crash will be laid to rest on Thursday. Manus Kelly was taking part in Donegal’s International Rally when the tragedy happened on Sunday. Manus Kelly passed away at the Donegal International Rally over the weekend Manus Kelly was recently elected as a Fianna Fail councillor Donegal County Council’s Nicholas Crossan and Mayor of Letterkenny John O’ Donnell have opened the book from noon today at the Letterkenny Public Service Centre. The 41-year-old’s funeral mass will take place at St Columba’s Church in Glenswilly at 12pm on June 27. It’s understood that his Hyundai i20 R5 hit a bump and smashed through a hedge and into a field. It happened at the Fanad Head loop on the final day of the three-day event. His death notice on RIP.ie reads: “Tragically, in a road traffic accident. “Beloved husband of much loved wife Bernie. Devoted father to Annie, Mandy, Charlie, Conan and baby Bella. “Lovingly remembered by his parents Donal and Jacquline sisters Breigeen, Kelda, Ciara and Shannagh brothers Donal, Caolan, Teigharan and Leon. “Deeply regretted by his nieces and nephews extended family, neighbours and many friends. “Remains reposing at his home tomorrow Tuesday from 11am. “Funeral from there on Thursday morning for 12 noon mass in St Columba’s Church Glenswilly followed by burial in Conwal Cemetery. Family flowers only please. “Family time from 11pm to 11am and on the morning of the funeral.” Mr Kelly’s navigator Donal Barrett was also injured in the crash and taken to Letterkenny General Hospital. A spokesman for MotorSport Ireland said Mr Barrett suffered “minor injuries” and was recovering. Manus was also the managing director of Tailored Facility Solutions (TFS)which is based in Letterkenny. ‘GREATEST SPORTSMAN TO GRACE PARISH’ Yesterday, Glenswilly GAA paid tribute to Manus, who was recently elected as a Fianna Fail councillor. They said: “A son, a brother, an uncle, a husband, a father, a player, a manager, a sponsor, a gentleman, a friend, a cousin, a business man, a counsellor and the greatest sportsman and rally man ever to grace our parish community and the county of Donegal. “It’s with deepest regret and sadness that we have lost one our clubs greatest Manus Mandy Kelly. “There are no more words. RIP Manus. We will miss you.” Top professional rally driver Ken Block, from California, said: “Ireland lost a true legend yesterday at the Donegal Rally. RIP Manus Kelly. “My thoughts this morning are with his family, friends, and co-driver. Godspeed. #ManusKelly #Legend.” ‘SORELY MISSED’ Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin said in a statement: “As three-time consecutive and reigning champion of the Donegal International Rally, Manus’s racing talent was limitless. “He was widely respected and loved by all of the rally community here in Ireland. “Manus had just embarked on a promising career in local politics having recently been elected to Donegal County Council representing the Fianna Fáil party. “It was obvious throughout his recent election campaign that he was passionate and entirely committed to serving the people of the Letterkenny electoral area which he cherished. “Manus made a huge contribution to his community. “As a self-employed businessman, he employed 60 people in Letterkenny. “He was an active fundraiser and advocate for the Letterkenny University Hospital. Manus’s death is an immeasurable loss to us all.”
