Al Ewing should write the New Warriors. Austin’s set to play The King (Picture: Matt Baron/REX) After much hype and speculation, Austin Butler has been the actor cast to play Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming biopic. He’s fended off the likes of Miles Teller, Harry Styles and Alsel Elgort, all of whom were also vying for the role. As we eagerly wait to hear more details about the as-yet-untitled film, here’s what you need to know about Austin – from his relationship with Vanessa Hudgens to what you might have seen him in before. Who is Austin Butler and what’s he been in? Austin Butler, 27, was born in California in 1991. He got his start in show business at 13 when he was approached by someone who represented a extras management agency. After he realised he enjoyed the work, he started taking acting classes. Austin’s first regular role was that of Lionel Scranton, whom he played for two seasons on Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide from 2005. In 2007, he appeared as Derek Hanson opposite Miley Cyrus on Hannah Montana, and from 2007 until 2008 he played James Garrett in Zoey 101. Then in 2009, he landed a role in his first feature-length film, Aliens in the Attic, in which he played James Pearson. Since then, he’s continued to act regularly in TV shows such as Wizards of Waverly Place, CSI: Miami, CSI: NY, Ruby & the Rockits and Life Unexpected. In 2011, you might have seen Austin as Zack Garvey in TV movie The Bling Ring. That same year, he started dating Vanessa Hudgens. He’s he’s still with her to this day and he has previously described her as his ‘rock’. As for his more recent roles, you might recognise Austin from his time playing Sebastian Kydd in The Carrie Diaries, Chase in Arrow, Noah Henry in The Intruders, Wil Ohmsford in the Shannara Chronicles, and Thomas in Dude. He also made his Broadway debut in 2018, playing Don Parritt in The Iceman Cometh oppoite Denzel Washington. 2019 has been a pretty big year for Austin so far, as, not only has he been chosen to play Elvis, but he’s also appeared as Jack in Jim Jarmusch’s The Dead Don’t Die and is due to star as Manson Family murderer Tex Watson in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. On the subject of his casting Austin as Elvis, Luhrmann told Deadline: ‘I knew I couldn’t make this film if the casting wasn’t absolutely right, and we searched thoroughly for an actor with the ability to evoke the singular natural movement and vocal qualities of this peerless star, but also the inner vulnerability of the artist. [metro-zone-post-strip] ‘Throughout the casting process, it was an honour for me to encounter such a vast array of talent. ‘I had heard about Austin Butler from his stand-out role opposite Denzel Washington in The Iceman Cometh on Broadway, and through a journey of extensive screen testing and music and performance workshops, I knew unequivocally that I had found someone who could embody the spirit of one of the world’s most iconic musical figures.’ [metro-fact-box id=”7022752″ title=”Got a showbiz story?” icon=”exclamation” /] [metro-link url=”https://metro.co.uk/2019/07/08/g-eazy-desperate-to-play-elvis-presley-in-new-movie-10131925/” title=”G-Eazy ‘desperate to play Elvis Presley in new movie’”] [metro-link url=”https://metro.co.uk/2019/06/16/rob-delaneys-elvis-presley-role-cut-from-rocketman-after-actor-permanently-dyed-his-hair-black-9969971/” title=”Rob Delaney’s Elvis Presley role cut from Rocketman after actor permanently dyed his hair black”]
