Over drinks after Dark and Stormy Productions’ most recent effort,  my theater-going companion and I puzzled over why David Harrower might have written “Blackbird,” and why a theater might choose to stage it. It’s the farthest thing from feel-good holiday fare: The methodical, dark-hued, one-act takes place in the garbage-strewn break room of some anonymous warehouse building somewhere. In this unruly landscape, the twenty-something Una has arrived unannounced to — well, “confront” isn’t quite the right word but it’ll have to do — the fifty-something Ray. When she was 12 and he was 40, Ray sexually abused the thought-she-was-in-love Una over a period of three months. A prison sentence and more than a decade later, they encounter each other for the first time. Picking their way through a literal and emotional trash-heap, Ray justifies, deflects and — barely — concedes his behavior. Una seeks her own sense of clarity and maybe her own flavor of justice. The pair struggle with the vestiges of feelings that they have for one another. It’s a rhetorical pitcher’s duel until a gratuitous plot twist walks through the door to propel the story to an ambiguous conclusion. From a small theater’s perspective, selecting “Blackbird” is easy to understand: With its nods to Nabokov’s “Lolita,” it’s an actors’ chewtoy, ripe with characters that have Troubled and Complicated Backstories just waiting to be illuminated. The actress playing Una feasts on a tour-de-force monologue; the actor playing Ray gets to gnaw on the problem of how to make an incomprehensible character somehow sympathetic. Under Michaela Johnson’s direction, Sara Marsh and Luverne Seifert offer well-modulated performances that hold their characters at a distance. Marsh endows Una with a broken-and-rebuilt sense of toughness. Seifert, whose Ray has trouble making consistent eye-contact with Una, brings an ambiguous not-quite-creepiness to his performance. But there’s a reluctance on the part of both actors to get elbows-deep dirty in these roles. Given the material — and the proximity in the very close confines of  a second-floor performance space at the Grain Belt Warehouse — “Blackbird” might fuel a profound sense of discomfit; maybe a cringing feeling of inevitability. The vibe during an opening weekend, though, instead felt like one of intellectual engagement. Getting back to the “why” of “Blackbird, the 2005 script seems designed to elicit strong feelings — outrage, compassion or maybe a palpable and powerful ambivalence. Perhaps, then, it’s a meditation on  he ugly-but-unassailable fact that some humans do monstrous things and some humans are victims of monstrous things. Assuming we live through those experiences, how do perpetrators and survivors (and even observers) live with those experiences? To what degree do they shape us? What do we tell ourselves to endure the days and the years? And how — how? — do we carry on? That’s an emotional question that hits squarely in the gut. But Dark and Stormy’s staging rides more on a sense of almost-judicial precision. “Blackbird” by Dark & Stormy Productions What: “Blackbird,” staged by Dark & Stormy Productions When: Through Jan. 5 Where: Grain Belt Warehouse, 77 13th Ave. NE, Minneapolis Tickets: $34-$15 Information: 612-401-4506 or darkstormy.org Capsule: A bird that doesn’t quite manage to fledge.
