This morning, an interesting opportunity arose for me. I recently learned about a pageant called Miss Marijuana, a first of it’s kind pageant committed to changing the stigma associated with cannabis and it’s use. I decided to enter because 1) I thought it would be a fun, different and enriching experience and 2) with cannabis […]

The Mercury News
They say 7-Elevens are lucky. Actually, nobody says that. But for one Powerball ticket holder who has yet to be identified, the 7-Eleven at 5148 Moorpark Ave. in San Jose is counting his or her lucky stars as we speak. Assuming they haven’t misplaced the ticket or have not been watching the news, this person is holding a a piece of paper worth $1.2 million.[related_articles location=”left” show_article_date=”false” article_type=”curated” curated_ids=”6204663,5960554,5960934″] Here are a few things to know about the ticket and the brightly lit shrine to salty snacks and plastic-wrapped sweetness where it was sold: The Moorpark Avenue store’s winner chose these numbers in Saturday’s $194 million draw: 12, 23, 32, 35, 68. The only number the player missed was the Powerball, number 21. The store eligible for one-half of 1% of the winnings, which amounts to about $6,200. This store was only one of two outlets nationwide to get the first five numbers without the Powerball number, according to NBC Bay Area (the other was in North Carolina). The store has been owned for 31 years by Rus Anbirbak, now in his 70s and looking to retire. Anbirbak said Monday morning that the store “is for sale. It’s a real nice store and I don’t want to give it up. But it’s time for me to retire. A lot of good things have happened to me at this store.” Anbirbak had to take another call (a prospective buyer, perhaps?) before he could tell us what these “good things” were. This recent winning lottery ticket was the second sold at the store since Anbirbak has owned it. “The other time wasn’t Powerball,” he said. “It was a long time ago, back when they first started the lottery.” Anbirbak said of that other winning ticket at the store: “I don’t remember how much it was for, but it was under a million dollars.” The store is No. #25480, according to the website where Anbirbak is reaching for for a buyer. Prospective buyers, according to the sales pitch, can take heart in knowing that “starting your own franchise is easier than you think. 7-Eleven is the world’s #1 convenience store, and a top-five franchisor. As a 7-Eleven Franchisee, you’ll be partnering with a brand that’s known and loved around the world. Hurry and apply now – this store will franchise fast!” The store has 2½ stars (out of five) in its Yelp review. It’s located in West San Jose in the Strawberry Park neighborhood, where the median price of a home is $1.49 million. Kids buying snacks here probably go to school at nearby Manuel De Vargas Elementary School, Warren E. Hyde Middle School or Cupertino High School.
