DAVID BECKHAM says winning the Treble in 1999 with Manchester United was his most satisfying and emotional time after suffering nationwide abuse that season. He was football’s Public Enemy No 1 in 1998 after being sent off in England’s World Cup last-16 shootout defeat to Argentina in France. David Beckham has opened up on the abuse he got from fans after being sent off against Argentina at the 1998 World Cup After he was red-carded for lashing out at Argentina’s Diego Simeone, an effigy of Becks was hung outside a pub in Croydon and he was jeered at away games the next season. But Beckham had the last laugh, lifting the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League trophies under Sir Alex Ferguson. The 44-year-old said: “The 1999 season was special for us as a club, and as individuals. “But for me and for my family, it was one of the most rewarding, one of the most emotional. “I had just come off the back of being sent off in the World Cup. Every game I played that season away from home, the abuse was like nothing I had experienced. “Every game I played at Old Trafford, I’d step over to take a corner, everyone stood up, clapped and sang my name. “Away from home, it was slightly different. So, to win a Treble in that fashion, it felt a lot more rewarding given what I had gone through.
Every game I played that season away from home, the abuse was like nothing I had experienced.
“The abuse continued for seasons after. But to be successful, at the end of a hard summer, meant more.” On May 16, United beat Arsenal to the Premier League crown by one point, with Beckham scoring in a 2-1 win over Tottenham. Next up they swatted aside Newcastle to win the FA Cup at Wembley. Then, on May 26, they came from behind to beat Bayern Munich 2-1 at the Nou Camp, thanks to late goals from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Beckham says it was the one match in his career where he experienced “butterflies” in his stomach. Speaking to OTRO.com, Beckham says he only calmed down once he spotted then-fiancee Victoria in the crowd. Beckham, 44, helped Manchester United win the Treble the season after the 1998 World Cup He said: “I’m not really a superstitious person but the one thing I like to know is my family are safe in the stadium. “I looked up and I could see my parents, I just couldn’t see Victoria. “Then, all of a sudden, my friend Dave Gardner walked in with Victoria and that’s when I relaxed and forgot all the nerves.” Bayern scored on six minutes through winger Mario Basler and could have easily doubled that advantage. Yet even though United were missing key players Roy Keane and Paul Scholes through suspension, Beckham had a feeling the match would swing in their favour once they equalised through Sheringham in stoppage-time. Beckham said: “Getting it back to 1-1 was a big moment. You start to think, ‘OK, prepare yourself for extra-time’. “But I knew that once we had that momentum, just like we had done in a few other games that season, like against Liverpool and Arsenal, all of a sudden the game changed. For all he has achieved, with United, England and European giants Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, Beckham says the ecstasy of winning the Champions League will remain in his heart. United’s Player of the Year wants to be in top shape this summer (Picture: Getty) Luke Shaw is determined to hit the ground running when Manchester United return for pre-season and has been training at Carrington this week in an effort to keep fit. The left-back, who was named both the fans’ and players’ Player of the Year after a strong campaign, was surprisingly left out of England’s squad for the UEFA Nations League this summer. But far from resting on his laurels, the Daily Mail report that Shaw is looking to get a head start on the tough pre-season that awaits Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s players. Solskjaer wants to drastically improve the fitness of his squad (picture: Getty) The Norwegian coach was alarmed by the low fitness levels of the squad he inherited from Jose Mourinho and warned the players they could expect a punishing pre-season. Before the squad departed at the end of the season, Solskjaer also made it clear that anyone who overindulges during the summer and returns overweight will be at risk of being left off the club’s tour of Australia, Singapore and China. [metro-zone-post-strip] Shaw has had issues with his conditioning in the past and has no desire to get in Solskjaer’s bad books, so has been using the club’s facilities to maintain his fitness while many of his teammates have gone on holiday. The 23-year-old will enjoy a vacation of his own soon, and is set to once again bring one of United’s fitness coaches with him. View this post on Instagram Pre season ready 🤙🏽 A post shared by Luke Shaw (@lukeshaw23) on Jul 6, 2018 at 3:16am PDT Last summer, Shaw underwent a boot camp with United’s fitness and conditioning coach Gary Walker in Dubai prior to the start of pre-season, with his commitment – and fitness levels – delighting former boss Jose Mourinho. Shaw will hope it has the same effect on Solskjaer, who wants to turn his squad into the fittest in the Premier League as he installs a high pressing, high intensity new style. [metro-tag-post-strip]

MAURIZIO SARRI’S first season in English football looks decent. Third in the Premier League, securing a return to the Champions League, Carabao Cup finalists, plus the Europa League final against Arsenal to come. Petr Cech has intimated he expects Frank Lampard to return one day This being Chelsea, with their history of firing successful managers, Sarri knows he has come up short. If the cord is cut after Wednesday’s final in Baku, sympathy will be in short supply at Stamford Bridge. Many there would like to see this chaotic regime come to an abrupt end. The complaints box is filling up, with players and staff chuntering away in the background about Sarri’s repetitive methods. At Manchester City, when they were thumped 6-0 in February, the discontent between manager and players was highlighted when Sergio Aguero scored his hat-trick. One of Sarri’s analysts angrily slammed down his laptop lid and muttered a string of expletives about the players failing to grasp the science of Sarri-ball. Out on the grass at the training ground, where modern footballers feel they have a right to be entertained, they are bored rigid. NO MAUR? The daily moans and groans and gripes, with players happily passing on their frustrations, have reached record levels — even for Chelsea. It is a long way back for Sarri because respect between coach and dressing room was instantly shredded when he excluded Gary Cahill — Champions League winner in 2012 — from the first team. It has gone stale, with the whiff of baccy polluting the air whenever Sarri comes into contact with players, officials or staff. Chelsea have a lot to chew on. Sarri-ball, with its stodgy ideology and over-reliance on Jorginho, will never be popular down at Stamford Bridge. Keeping that lot sweet is never easy. They have made their feelings clear by singing “F*** Sarri-ball” and “We want Sarri out” at various stages of the season. Success in the Europa League — as Rafa Benitez discovered when his Blues beat Benfica in 2013 — is not enough to save a Chelsea manager. Others have gone the same way. Antonio Conte, who beat Manchester United in last season’s FA Cup final, was fired in pre-season. Carlo Ancelotti was bulleted a year after winning the Premier League and FA Cup Double in 2010. This being Chelsea, they do things different to most. HAZ TO GO? A sweeping new era is about to begin, with Chelsea preparing to recalibrate the first team to cope with the departure of Eden Hazard. The deal to sell the winger to Real Madrid after seven years in West London has already been done. Hazard made good on a promise to take Chelsea back to the Champions League and they have kept to their side of the bargain by allowing him to leave. He has done his bit. Next year a new Chelsea side will take shape, with Christian Pulisic a big part of their plans. They have limited transfer ambitions because they are in a plea-bargaining process with Fifa after being found guilty of 29 regulation breaches. Mistakes have been made elsewhere but it will be part of Petr Cech’s remit to make sure everything is above board when he takes up his new role. Cech, retiring from the sport after keeping goal for Arsenal in the Europa League final, is returning to Chelsea at executive level. He will play a big part in Sarri’s future, a persuasive figure in discussions with director Marina Granovskaia and Roman Abramovich.
