Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is planning to use a very fluid front three in the forthcoming season, not letting any of his forwards stick to just one position.
Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Daniel James all look set to play big roles for United this season and Solskjaer believes all three can occupy any position in his frontline.
The Red Devils beat Leeds United 4-0 in a friendly in Perth on Wednesday with Rashford starting through the middle and James on the left flank. Martial came on to score in the 4-0 rout.
Solskaer explained after the win how he plans to unleash his forward this season: ‘With Marcus [Rashford] he can play along the frontline,’ said Solskjaer.
‘Sometimes he likes to drift to the left, same with Anthony [Martial], both of them can play at nine and 11, also together as a pair as a nine and a 10, also sometimes on the right hand side.

‘For me, it’s great to have forwards who rotate and see, “He’s on the right side and I’ll be on the left side, or he’s through the middle, I’ll be on the side”.
‘I don’t think we can nail them down to one position, because they’re good footballers who can see space.’
The Norwegian made similar comments about James this week, saying: ‘Dan can play all across the front line. Obviously more right or left wing but he can play through the middle as well.’
However, United’d front three on the opening day of the Premier League season against Chelsea is far from guaranteed, with Solskjaer also suggesting Mason Greenwood could force his way into the first XI.
The 18-year-old started and scored against Leeds on the right wing, having also scored against Perth Glory earlier this week, catching the eye of his manager.
‘He has a chance to start against Chelsea,’ said Solskjaer. ‘I won’t say it is not a possibility. It is a good possibility if he keeps going as he does.’
Alexis Sanchez also remains an option up front for United, while Romelu Lukaku remains at the club but is expected to join Inter Milan before the start of the season.
