The Scottish Sun
FAIRYTALE castle. Check. Stunning location. Check. Best of food and wine. Check. Constant pampering. Check.
It might sound like a dream but it can become a reality at Stobo Castle, Scotland’s premier health spa.
Stobo Castle is Scotland’s premier health spa
From the minute you turn into the drive and grab a glimpse of the castle itself, nestled in the beautiful Borders countryside, ‘Wow’ is the only word that does it justice.
My husband Scott and I were booked into the deluxe and spacious Murray Room. It was flooded with sunlight from the two French doors, which opened on to our own terrace with fabulous views.
We were keen to get outside and set off to explore Stobo’s gorgeous grounds. First stop was the lake, then the glorious Japanese water gardens.
But if the Scottish weather doesn’t play ball then there’s no better place to chill than the Stobo Castle spa.

It boasts a 25m ozone-treated pool with views across the spectacular countryside plus sauna, steam room, relaxation suite and outdoor hot tubs.
Ladies-only facilities are also available. These include the laconium, where you can relax in a more gentle heat, the aromatic steam room with essential oils, the crystal steam room with eucamint to stimulate the circulation, and the invigorating ice fountain which awakens your senses and helps firm the skin.
If you’re looking for a more active break, Stobo has that covered too.

They have a gym and run daily classes, with everything from Aquafit, Pilates, Metafit and kettlebell workouts to bum, legs and tum sessions.
I joined a yoga class, with instructor Erin taking us through a variety of Hatha postures before a 10-minute relaxation at the end. Sheer bliss.

Of course, spa treatments are another big attraction. I opted for the essential booster facial and my therapist Nikki certainly deserves a gold star on the pampering front.
In bygone days a visit to a health spa might include a diet of lettuce washed down with carrot juice, but no such worries at Stobo. The food is five-star with something to suit every palate.

Both Scott and I are vegetarians and enjoyed a range of meat-free dishes including feta and tomato salad, thai green curry, and a vanilla panna cotta with the most perfect wobble!
After a day of incessant pampering, where better to end it than a nightcap in Stobo’s cocktail lounge where the welcoming mixologists will quickly conjure up your favourite tipple.
We were at Stobo as an indulgent experience before the famed Stobo Castle Ladies Day at Musselburgh Racecourse, Scotland’s most glamorous day at the races.
This year’s meeting is on June 1, but it’s never too early to start hunting down the millinery masterpieces, statement designer creations and vertiginous heels to make you stand out.

The Musselburgh event is Scotland’s largest and most prestigious 5H Ladies Day and while for some it may be all about top-class horse racing, it’s also widely regarded as one of the biggest fashion extravaganzas in the Scottish social scene.
As usual the 2019 spectacular will feature live music throughout the day, celebrity DJ Edith Bowman behind the decks for the after party and a host of top names in Scottish fashion and style — along with a secret celebrity — will be on the hunt for this year’s King and Queen of Style.
But even if you don’t make the running in the style stakes, a visit to Stobo is a racing cert to make you feel like a winner.
