Objective For my second reflective writing assignment I have chosen to write about the topic of critical thinking. This concept caught my attention because King (2017) identifies it, and problem-solving, as essential skills for success. As an adult educator, my mission and aim for my students’, is to be successful. Therefore, it seemed appropriate to […]

Eric was 87 the day we met and when we shook hands, it felt like shaking hands with history. Soft-spoken, he was a consummate gentleman whose eyes immediately began to moisten when he recalled that early morning in 1938 when he answered a knock on his door and found two Nazis standing there. His Ph.D. from the University of Vienna meant nothing to them because they didn’t care who he was; on a mission to “cleanse Austria of its Jews,” they had come to “take me for questioning” simply because of what he was: an Austrian Jew. Within two hours he was shoved into an overcrowded railroad car bound for the concentration camp known as Dachau. “It was the most terrible ride you could imagine,” he recalled. “People were bunched so close together, no way to go to the bathroom. I remember the fear, the humiliation. We were no longer names, just numbers. “Yet the physical strain was not as great as the emotional strain, wondering what happened to your mother, your wife, your children.” He was no longer just in captivity; he was now in a world of depravity. “There was a young man there from Vienna who I knew well. Storm troopers drew a line that we were not allowed to cross. Then one took this young man’s cap, threw it over the line and yelled, ‘Pick it up!’ When he crossed the line they shot him. I saw that! I was there when it happened. It happened in Dachau.” The stories Eric shared were painful to hear, but by the grace of God he would live to tell them and make it to America. When he was thanked for taking the time, he shook his head. “No,” he said, offering a hug, “I thank you! You don’t know what it means to someone like me to tell my story to someone like you, because now I know that when I’m gone there’ll be one more person who heard it from an eyewitness.” It’s been regarded here as a sacred trust ever since. His story would be shared here in columns and on speaking dates, after which he’d get a call: “Eric, I just want you to know I told your story again last night.” When he died at 97, he left a note: “Ask my friend at the Herald to do my eulogy,” and that’s what happened at Temple Shalom in Newton. His favorite holiday was Passover, the celebration of freedom. “It could happen again,” he would tell guests at his seder table. “This is why I feel a duty to keep reminding you of the deadly consequences of prejudice, racism, anti-Semitism; it has been proven that the inconceivable is possible.” Now here we are: It’s Pesach again, meaning seders were held around the world Friday at sundown. In Eric’s memory, happy Passover.

Dear Colleagues, As we look ahead to the beginning of Passover, I want to share a bit of JDC history. Tomorrow – the eve of Passover – is the seventy-sixth anniversary of the beginning of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising.  In 1943, April 19 was the night of the first seder, just as it is this […]

Reflections of a Sexual Abuse Victim

How is the veneration of the cross done during Good Friday? I would see people line up to kiss the cross. Thinking of veneration by kissing, I would always remember how the supposed to be the holy lips of the Jesuit priest, Fr. Ruben Tanseco, kissed and sucked my dick. I stopped venerating the cross […]

Since starting the podcast, some of my married friends have come up to me and told me to stop bagging on married couples…sorry about that! But it’s not like I am actually trying to bag on married couples. Literally, all I write about is my dating woes (in a comedic and uplifting way of course). […]
