An archaeologist analyzing a pile of prehistoric human poop found the remains of an entire viper, including a fang. Researcher Elanor Sonderman was studying the indigenous people who, 1500 years ago, used a cave in Texas’s Lower Pecos canyonlands as a shelter and bathroom. One way archaeologists learn about a long-gone civilization’s diet and health […]

Albuquerque Studios entered the spotlight last October when it was purchased by Netflix. While the complex is clearly the jewel in the crown of New Mexico’s production infrastructure, with eight soundstages totaling 132,000 square feet, 100,000 square feet of production offices, a large backlot and support space, it’s not the only modern studio facility in […]

Vanlife in the Whale

On Monday April 8, we arrived at Old Settler’s Music Festival in Tilmon Texas. We camped with the site preppers in their campsite which they called the 420 Hill Gang. It is Named that because it is located at the highest point in the campground at 420 feet above sea level ( obviously, the name […]

...Theresa Kishkan, writer...

Note: 5 years ago we were leaving New Mexico to fly to Edmonton for a few days. And this morning, we are preparing to leave home for a few days in Edmonton as well as a couple of days in Drumheller, in search of both dinosaurs and ancient Kishkans. I’m thinking that Ian Tyson would […]

When the long-overdue G-Line train finally begins carrying passengers Friday, seven locations in the northwest metro area will get new life. The 11-mile commuter rail line features seven stations [cq comment=”and 2,300 parking spaces “]serving Denver, Adams County, Arvada and Wheat Ridge, each of which has different plans for how to take advantage of the transit line. It is projected to carry 9,000 passengers a day in its first year of service and grow to nearly 13,000 a day by 2035. The G-Line’s opening comes after the Regional Transportation District and its private-sector partner spent months trying to adjust the software that controls the timing of its crossing gates. After fits and starts, recriminations and lawsuits, regulators finally gave the line the go-ahead to open. The G-Line will share two of its stations — Pecos Junction and 41st & Fox — with the B-Line, which up until now has run without stops between Westminster and Denver Union Station. The G-Line will open with quiet zones in place (no annoying horns), and the 27-minute end-to-end ride will cost $3. Click on the circles below for a stop-by-stop trip along the G-Line, unveiling plans laid and efforts made to develop around each station as the metro area’s newest commuter rail line launches. When New Mexico’s new governor, Democrat Michelle Lujan Grisham, signed SB2 in late March, the headline was that it more than doubled the annual cap on the state’s 25%- to 30%-per-project refundable film and TV tax credit, from $50 million to $110 million.  Arguably more noteworthy, however, was the new law’s provision that the cap […]

Geocaching While Black

Another courthouse, another walk about. I slipped inside and visited the facilities and thought about what I was going to do here. As you can see, the Confederate role in county naming was amply mentioned. A few other small monuments of military memory were around, too but there was work to do and the courthouse […]
