Express Elevator to Hell

I spend much time on this blog singing the praises of visual storytelling, often at the expense of literary storytelling or the medium of literature in general. The great irony of those blunt, snarky remarks is that most blogging, including Express Elevator to Hell, is writing-dominated; most people I know think of blogging as a […]

(Caroline Brehman/Las Vegas Review-Journal) @carolinebrehman Sun filtered through pine trees, and geese honked on the sprawling lawn at Palm Mortuary-Eastern in the central Las Vegas Valley as hundreds of people gathered just after sunrise Sunday to celebrate Easter. “We learn that there’s good news from the graveyard today,” said John Horton, who works at the mortuary helping families plan their memorials and speaking at services. “Good news that the tomb is empty. Good news that Jesus rose from the dead … Good news that we don’t need to fear death anymore.” While the 34th annual Easter Sunrise Service featured messages from a priest and a pastor, mortuary general manager Glenn Abercrombie said the event was nondenominational. “We feel that the community gives so much to us, and they entrust us with so much,” Abercrombie said. “… This is one way we can bring the community together and give them a time of celebration and hope.” Abercrombie and his employees set out 1,500 white chairs for guests. Nearly all of them were filled by 6:45 a.m., and families with strollers and small children stood around the edge of the congregation. Robynn Bell has attended the sunrise service for the past 10 years, she said. Her husband and their three sons — ages 1, 4 and 7 — wore coordinated blue suits Sunday. The boys wore patterned blue fedoras. Bell said the sunrise is symbolic of Jesus’ resurrection in the Bible. She liked that the service was open to all and that it was outside. Her boys gasped and craned their necks when dozens of white doves were released near the end. “I like the interconnectedness,” Bell said. “… I like what it represents … If you are religious, to me, if you believe in Easter, that’s one of the key principles of following Jesus, is to be accepting of everyone. Love was the one thing that he wanted everyone to remember. We’re more alike than we are different.” After the ceremony, families filed out of the parking lot. Some walked among the headstones, carrying bouquets of flowers. “We’re the stewards of all these people’s lives and treasured memories,” Abercrombie said. “… It’s not just a place for their body to be, it’s a place for (families) to come and celebrate and feel connected to their ancestors.” Elizabeth Errett, 72, has attended the Easter service at the mortuary every year since 1993. She used to attend the service with her husband, who died in 2004. “That’s probably why it’s so emotional,” she said, her voice caught in her throat as she spoke. Errett clutched a small plant with delicate yellow flowers. She and her husband have gravesites at Palm, where they will be buried together after she dies. “I love the sermons, the music and the release of the doves,” Errett said of the service. “… It’s just peaceful … I feel closer to him.” Contact Kimber Laux at klaux@reviewjournal.com. It is undeniable that there are constraints to change, whether for an individual or an organisation. In the situation of the business organisation, because the actual practice process of change to the real sustainable development is complicated, the constraints to change should be analysed and solved if it decides to change its business operation method […]

Although the automobile improved efficiency and flexibility, its domination since modernist times made other road users vulnerable. The hierarchal street system eradicated “the tradition of urban streets as important public spaces” (Hess et al., 2) as urban planners designed streets considering primarily the needs of automobile users. As a fundamental component of urban design and […]

“Pilots Take Aim at Instructions for Boeing 737 MAX,” The Wall Street Journal, April 4, 2019.  Were the instructions detailed enough? People died. When you’re training people in a new system, or compliance, you must choose how detailed your instructions are.  Are they too detailed, so that people’s attention wanes, or are they too brief, […]

I’ve been thinking about dreams and goals a lot lately. I’ve been contemplating my sister’s life and one of the dreams she never allowed herself to follow,  even though it was an innate desire that was never far from her thoughts. She dreamed of going to culinary school one day and of making a living […]

I also visit some churches in the Midlands; Tredington, Honington (which has a noteworthy Baroque monument), Breedon on the Hill, Staunton Harold (with its mural on the […]

Kim Kardashian claps back at Donald Trump criticism (Picture: Twitter/CNN) Kim Kardashian has something to say to people throwing shade at her for working with President Donald Trump. Spoiler alert: She does not give a toss about what you think, as long as it means she can save lives. The Keeping Up With The Kardashian star – who is working on getting a law degree – is already making her dent on the scene. This comes after Kim and her lawyer Shawn Holley successfully petitioned Trump to commute the life sentence of non-violent drug offender Alice Marie Johnson, which led to the First Step Act being passed. In the process, Kim visited the White House and had a meeting with the president in the Oval Office and has since maintained a relationship with the administration and is working with officials to try to obtain more clemencies. But some fans do not like the idea of Kim getting involved in politics. Speaking to CNN’s Van Jones Show in an interview aired on Saturday, she said: ‘So many people would say to me, “Don’t go to the White House, your career will be over. Don’t go there,” and I just kinda weighed the decision where it was like, to save a life, or to get maybe bad tweets about me or a bad news story for a few days.’ Kim is working on getting a law degree (Picture: Rex Features) She added: ‘I guarantee you the people sitting behind bars do not care who the president is. They just want that relief. And so if I could have done that, I don’t care.’ She told Van Jones that people write to her ‘every time there is an issue going on in the White House, which is pretty often.’ The mother-of-three, who is one of the most popular individuals on Instagram with 135 million followers, said she is trying to use her fame to bring about more political change. ‘I think that people, I see on Twitter people writing me all the time, “Kim, do something, do this, do that,” and I have been very honest with the administration,’ she said. ‘I have been very honest with everyone, from Jared [Kushner] and Ivanka [Trump], to everyone in the White House about how I feel about immigration in particular and we’ve had the conversations.’ She continued: ‘The reality is, I can’t do everything. I’m not in that position and if I can change people’s lives in a different area, I have to focus on that and I have definitely voiced my opinion on other things and requested things in other areas.’ Kim has already been offered a job at a law firm with OJ’s attorney (Picture: Rex Features) It is very likely that Kim will continue such work as she is studying for a law degree and has already been offered a law job with OJ Simpson’s attorney Robert Shapiro. Shapiro, like Kim’s late father Robert Kardashian Snr, was a part of OJ Simpson’s famous legal team during his 1995 murder trial. OJ was acquitted of killing his ex-wife Nicole Brown, and her friend Ron Goldman. [metro-tag-post-strip] Kim didn’t finish college but she’s found a way to fulfill her legal ambitions by taking up an apprenticeship at a law firm, which the State of California allows. Kim’s interview comes as it was reported that the star would receive the Women Leadership in Law Award along with her lawyer Holley. According to TMZ, the pair will be handed their awards, sponsored by The California Lawyer and the Daily Journal, at a conference in Beverly Hills in May. The 38-year-old and her attorney were sent letters praising them for their ‘life-changing’ work. They were told: ‘You both are truly inspirational, and your work has been life-changing.’ Well, ain’t that something?
