AM+DG A little digression from our regular articles… I received an email this morning and thought I’d share it. “RemnantchildofMary” commented: Hey David! I absolutely loved the piece you wrote. A long time ago I was reflecting on why we grieve when we lose a dog who is our pet. I think it is because […]

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — In the middle of the dog days of summer, hundreds of pet owners were rejoicing Friday. After months of waiting and hundreds of thousands of dollars in spending, Broad Ripple’s Dog Park is officially open. There’s a new covered pavilion with picnic tables and a dog washing station. Most importantly, artificial turf everyone hopes keep the park from turning into a field of mud. Cristy Reed brought her two dogs Mallow and Tux on opening day. “Oh, my gosh, the dog park is so nice. We are so excited about it,” she said. “I’m not sure who is more excited, the dogs or the people taking the dogs here.” A patron plays with her dog at the Broad Ripple Bark Park, which reopened July 19, 2019, at Broad Ripple Park, 1500 Broad Ripple Ave. (WISH Photo) Even on the hottest days of the year, pooches need to play. Despite the name, this is not just a dog park. For many who live around here, where small yards are the norm, it’s a daily ritual. That means they are on a first-name basis with many of the dog park members and their pooches. Amanda Garrison and her dog Rusty are fixtures. “It’s more work for us to not come to the dog park and work him out at home than it is to spend an hour of our lives here every day,” Garrison said. That’s why each new amenity gives a reason to celebrate. There’s a shelter with picnic tables to give protection from the rain and sun. A dog washing station helps, especially after a dip in the nearby White River. A new water fountain serves two-legged and four-legged members. Even few man-made hills give variety to the landscaping. Resting dogs lie at the Broad Ripple Bark Park, which reopened July 19, 2019, at Broad Ripple Park, 1500 Broad Ripple Ave. (WISH Photo) “I am totally thrilled,” said Kathy FitzGerald, manager of Broad Ripple Park. After 20 years of operation and with about 700 members, growing grass just was not possible so artificial turf was required. “This is a dog neighborhood that they also love their pets,” she said. But when you take a long look at all the pets having fun, it’s clear they love this place, too. The original plan was to open at the beginning of the month, but weather set them back. An annual pooch pass costs $75 dollars a year, but now that we’re in July, it is discounted to $55. You can also buy a daily pass for $5. Plus, VIP passes are offered for $125 that allowed members into each of the four Indy Parks Dog Parks: Broad Ripple, Eagle Creek Park on West 56th Street, Paul Ruster Dog Park at 1313 S. Post Road and Smock Dog Park at 451 E. Stop 11 Road. Indy Parks offers more information online.

It’s hot… Really hot and for people without homes it can be tough. “With the heat the way it’s been we decided ok let’s…it’s been this way for the past week we’ve been letting people back in 2oclock that without any extra staff tomorrow and Sunday, of course, will be even hotter and on weekends people leave here at 9 and they come back at 6 so we’ve talked and we gonna let everyone back at noon Saturday and Sunday,” said Bob Williams, Executive Director for Community Crossroads Center. On average Crossroads serves around 80 people a night but due to the heat, the number is higher. “That’s what we for I don’t want people who are homeless sitting out there in parks, woods and all that in this heat and that could lead to some really bad medical issues,” said Williams. When residents check-in and out they receive water to stay cool and hydrated. Just around the corner at Dream Park are some kids at a Splash Pad. This water park giving kids something to do during the summer but also beating the heat. But let’s not forget about our furry friends. “Remember their wearing a fur coat so they’re a lot warmer than you,” said Dr. Linda Kuhn, East Carolina Veterinary Service. Dr. Linda Kuhn is a veterinarian. She owns East Carolina Veterinary Service in Greenville. Dr. Kuhn says walking and playing with your pets is great but with heat like this timing is everything. “So you want to walk them early in the morning and late in the evening if you have to go out in the middle of the day try to avoid the tar on the road. It’s very very hot. You also just like with you plenty of water and you can even wet down their hair coat to make them cooler before you go outside,” said Dr. Kuhn. But what if you have an outdoor animal as a pet? How do you keep them cool? “And if people have garages that are air-conditioned that’s a great place to bring them in,” said Dr. Kuhn. If you think our furry friend is reacting to the heat negatively. “Call your veterinarian or call the emergency clinic put him in the car and wet him down,” Dr. Kuhn.
