MANCHESTER UNITED and Everton have been offered the chance to sign Kevin Strootman on loan, according to reports. The Dutch midfielder, 29, quit Roma to join Marseille last year as they looked to challenge Paris Saint-Germain’s Ligue 1 dominance. Marseille are looking to offload Kevin Strootman However, after a poor campaign, Marseille are sixth in the league with a game left and need to trim the squad. Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol tweeted: “ Everton and Manchester United offered chance to sign Marseille/Holland midfielder Kevin Strootman on loan. “Marseille signed him from Roma for £23m last summer. Marseille need to cut costs after a disappointing season.” While at PSV Eindhoven, the 42-cap Holland international was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford when David Moyes and Louis van Gaal were in charge. But a transfer never happened and he joined Roma in 2013, but struggled with injuries during his time in Italy. United were once again strongly tipped to snap him up but balked at the £80MILLION price tag then-Roma boss Rudi Garcia slapped on him. Strootman has started 20 games and come off the bench seven times this season for Marseille, who are now managed by Garcia. MANCHESTER UNITED are assembling a committee of three ex-players to help identify transfer targets. The idea has been discussed at Carrington, with former title-winner Darren Fletcher present at the meeting. Rio Ferdinand has been approached to be part of a new Man Utd transfer committee Darren Fletcher released by Stoke could play a part in Man Utd recruitment Fletcher, 35, is expected to head up a team who will be charged with finding players to fit the United DNA. Rio Ferdinand, 40, is another former United star who has been approached about taking a position on the team. Liverpool have already successfully gone down this route with boss Jurgen Klopp working in tandem with sporting director Michael Edwards, head of scouting and recruitment Dave Fallows and goalkeeping coach John Achteberg. United want to get away from the big-spending scattergun approach on stellar names that has clearly failed under three managers in the six years since Sir Alex Ferguson retired. Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is now left with players on huge wages who are no longer wanted by the club but cannot be shifted. United cannot find a taker for Alexis Sanchez, who is on £505,000 a week. And £89million record buy Paul Pogba has also been a big disappointment since returning to the club from Juventus three years ago. Instead, United are now seeking young hard-working and hungry players who are determined to make their names at Old Trafford. CHANGE OF TRANSFER POLICY Swansea winger Daniel James, 21, fits that bill and is close to a £15m switch. Academy chief Nicky Butt was also involved in the meeting at Carrington and the former United midfielder, 44, is already having a big say in which young players are ready to step up from the youth ranks. United yesterday axed reserve team boss Ricky Sbragia, 62, and Butt will oversee changes that could lead to another former midfielder Quinton Fortune take up a coaching role at Old Trafford. Butt will also get a much bigger budget to start scouting the best young stars around the globe. In describing the type of player he wants, Solskjaer said recently: “You have to have a certain kind of attitude about you to make you a Manchester United player. Our fans want to see exciting players, it’s always been in our culture. You have to have that work ethic.” [pod_component pod_component_config_id=”20190515-carousel-YZiteIx4h” pod_component_config_url=”https://www.thesun.co.uk/nu-sun-pod-component-config-prod/20190515-carousel-YZiteIx4h.json” pod_component_config_loader_url=”https://www.thesun.co.uk/nu-sun-pod-loaders-prod/1.57.1/componentLoader.js?122286″ src=”https%3A%2F%2Fiframe.thesun.co.uk%2Fnu-sun-pod-widgets-prod%2Fiframe-pod.html%3Fid%3D20190515-carousel-YZiteIx4h%26script%3Dhttps%3A%2F%2Fwww.thesun.co.uk%2Fnu-sun-pod-loaders-prod%2F1.57.1%2FcomponentLoader.js%3F122286%26config%3Dhttps%3A%2F%2Fwww.thesun.co.uk%2Fnu-sun-pod-component-config-prod%2F20190515-carousel-YZiteIx4h.json”] [article-rail-topic title=”Latest Manchester United news” term_id=”1480″ posts_number=”6″ /] Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward made it clear last week that the club’s continued success on a business level means they will back Solskjaer, 46, in the transfer market.
