Quitting

Read Acts 5 The book of Acts is not for wimps. It’s a direct challenge to our natural desire to play it safe. While some well-intentioned preachers say Christianity is about comfort and prosperity, the Bible paints a much different picture. Peter and John’s trial before the Sanhedrin is just the beginning. Members of the […]

Boris Johnson has allegedly made taxpayers shell out for his new home (Picture: Getty/AFP) Boris Johnson has been slammed for spending thousands of pounds of taxpayers’ money on new furniture ahead of his expected move into Number 10. Mr Johnson allegedly told civil servants he ‘didn’t have any stuff’ because his estranged wife kept all of his belongings when he moved out of their marital home. Sources would not comment on the exact amount spent on new furniture for Mr Johnson, 55, but he has been criticised for dipping into public money while earning more than £830,000 in the year since quitting his role as foreign secretary. In addition to his £79,468 salary as an MP, Johnson made £761,077 this year from his column in The Telegraph, book royalties and speaking engagements. A government source told the Mail on Sunday: ‘We were very surprised as he is not exactly a poor man, is he? His bill is quite toppy.’ Boris reclines on an athlete’s bed during the 2012 London Olympics (Picture: Getty) In the past, other prime ministers have used public money for renovations on the Grade-1 listed 10 Downing Street, but paid for ‘furniture and fittings’ with their own money. But sources say Mr Johnson’s girlfriend Carrie Symonds, 31, has made it clear nothing from her flat – where he currently lives – will be taken to Downing Street if he is confirmed as the new Tory party leader. The Camberwell home the couple share became the focus of attention after neighbours heard the pair rowing. During the heated row, neighbours said they heard Ms Symonds telling Mr Johnson: ‘You just don’t care for anything because you are spoilt. ‘You have no care for money or anything.’ Former Liberal Democrat Cabinet Minister Sir Ed Davey has demanded to know how much public money has been spent by Mr Johnson on furniture. He said he would be writing to the Cabinet Office to make the spending public. His girlfriend Carrie Symonds is rumoured to be moving into Downing Street with him (Picture: Rex) He told the newspaper: ‘I’ve heard of sofa government but this is ridiculous – he earns a fortune and should be able to afford his own furniture. ‘Theresa May did and she has never earned anything like as much as Boris Johnson. Rather than wine stains, he should be worried about the stain he is making on British politics.’ Downing Street has refused to comment on the allegations. May is understood to have already moved her furniture out of Downing Street to her Maidenhead home to make way for her successor. Although the result of the Conservative leadership contest will not be announced until Tuesday, Mr Johnson is widely assumed to take the job over Jeremy Hunt. Mrs May will attend her final Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday before visiting the Queen to formerly submit her resignation. Boris Johnson is widely tipped to be stepping into 10 Downing Street this week (Picture: SWNS) It has not been confirmed if Ms Symonds will take up residence in Downing Street, but if she does, she and Mr Johnson will be the first unmarried couple in history to make it their home.  Johnson is still married to estranged wife Marina Wheeler, 55, who he split from in September 2018 after 25 years of marriage. They pair announced they had initiated divorce proceedings in the same month, which are not finalised. [metro-fact-box id=”8027376″ title=”Got a story for Metro.co.uk?” icon=”exclamation” /]

PHILIP Hammond will resign on Wednesday if Boris Johnson becomes PM, he announced today. The Remain-backing Chancellor will join Justice Secretary David Gauke in quitting before BoJo can sack him. Philip Hammond will quit if Boris Johnson becomes PM The Brexiteer is heavy favourite to be the next PM He told the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show he can’t sign up to Mr Johnson’s Brexit plans and will therefore step down shortly before Theresa May leaves office. He said: “I’m sure I’m not going to be sacked because I’m going to resign before we get to that point. “Assuming that Boris Johnson becomes the next Prime Minister, I understand the conditions for serving in his Cabinet will include accepting a No Deal exit on October 31, and it’s not something that I could ever sign up to. “I intend to resign after Prime Minister’s Questions, before the Prime Minister goes to the Palace. “All the pollsters, all the bookmakers suggest that Boris Johnson is going to win – the question is by how much.”
I’m not going to be sacked because I’m going to resign before we get to that point
Mr Hammond insisted Brexit is the only reason for his resignation, adding: “It’s nothing personal, I’ve always got on very well with Boris and I’ve found him an engaging character. “Beyond the Brexit question I don’t have many disagreements with him.” The Chancellor said he would work with other Remainer MPs to block a No Deal Brexit on October 31. But he also predicted that Boris may be able to force through a tweaked version of Theresa May’s deal thanks to his Brexiteer credentials. GAUKE-WARD SQUAD Last night Mr Gauke became the first minister to confirm he can’t serve under BoJo – instead he will hand Mrs May a letter of resignation minutes before she quits herself on Wednesday afternoon. The Justice Secretary told the Sunday Times: “If the test of loyalty to stay in the Cabinet is a commitment to support No Deal on October 31 – which, to be fair to him, Boris has consistently said – then that’s not something I’m prepared to sign up to.” He added: “In a period of time where there is no parliamentary majority, there’s political uncertainty and a lack of stability, I worry that the UK then will essentially be supplicants. “We’ll go through the pain of No Deal and then we will have no choice but to go back to the EU but in a weaker negotiating position. I fear that, frankly, there is a humiliation for us there if we go down that route.” Among other Cabinet ministers, Rory Stewart has already ruled out serving under BoJo while Greg Clark and David Lidington are also expected to be sacked because of their pro-EU views. As many as a dozen junior ministers are likely to join them on the back benches rather than sign up to Mr Johnson’s hardline Brexit plans. Keir Starmer, the Shadow Brexit Secretary, has vowed to work with Tory rebels to ensure a cross-party coalition can block No Deal. He said: “After they have resigned this week, I will want to work with all those former ministers who, like me, want to ensure Parliament can stop a disastrous and chaotic exit from the EU.” [article-rail-section title=”MOST READ IN POLITICS” posts_category=”318″ posts_number=”6″ query_type=”popular” /] Last week, the Commons passed a law which would stop the next PM from suspending Parliament in order to force through a No Deal Brexit. Mr Hammond has long been a hate figure for Tory Brexiteers who accuse him of wrecking the UK’s chances of getting a good deal from the EU. He is said to have blocked attempts to spend cash on preparing for No Deal, and joined the Commons rebellion last week. The Chancellor was seen loading bags into a car yesterday Mr Hammond is currently living at 11 Downing Street David Gauke is also standing down this week Theresa May will stand down on Wednesday [bc_video video_id=”6061945061001″ account_id=”5067014667001″ player_id=”default” embed=”in-page” padding_top=”56%” autoplay=”” min_width=”0px” max_width=”640px” width=”100%” height=”100%” caption=”Donald Trump reveals he told Boris Johnson he would do a ‘great job’ as PM in phone call”] We pay for your stories! (Picture: BBC) Gray Atkins (Toby Alexander-Smith) has been getting along rather nicely with the Taylor clan in EastEnders, but — in spite of him having charmed Karen (Lorraine Stanley) — he hasn’t been able to win over Mitch (Roger Griffiths). The Walford 10k made the rift between the two much bigger — and the animosity reaches boiling point in the coming episodes, as the pair come to blows in shocking scenes. Will the residents of Albert Square learn of the solicitor’s sinister side as a result? With the future on his mind, Keegan (Zack Morris) decides to spend the day with Gray at his office. Whilst he’s there, he gets inspired by one of his brother-in-law’s colleagues, which ultimately prompts him to think about what he wants. The young lad later announces to his family that he’s quitting school. Mitch isn’t in the least bit pleased about his son’s announcement, and an argument ensues. However, Keegan’s having none of it, and reveals that it was Gray that inspired him into making this decision. Mitch is infuriated by Keegan’s revelation, and — unable to let it go — he marches round to his son-in-law’s house to have it out with him. [metro-video id=”1939692″] Gray and Mitch face off and it doesn’t take long for things to get heated, as the pair proceed to insult one another. All hell breaks loose, as it soon comes to blows — something which leaves everyone shocked. Harrowing scenes recently revealed that Gray has been assaulting Chantelle, so — in spite of being perceived by the residents of Walford as a nice guy — viewers are well aware that the solicitor has a violent streak. Will this upcoming showdown with Mitch perhaps enlighten the Taylors to Gray’s darker side? Or will they simply believe that he is standing up for hims One to watch: Friday 26th July at 8pm on BBC One.
