Aaron Ramsey has been sent back to Arsenal for further treatment (Picture: REX/Shutterstock) Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey has returned from international duty with Wales due to a niggling thigh injury. Ramsey, 28, played no part as Wales defeated Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 in Wrexham on Wednesday night after picking up the knock but Ryan Giggs was initially confident the midfielder would return in time to face Slovakia this weekend. However, the Arsenal man’s attempts to train proved unsuccessful and he has been ruled out of Sunday’s Euro 2020 qualifying match following the setback. Arsenal boss Unai Emery will be hoping that Ramsey returns to full fitness for the side’s Premier League clash with Newcastle after the international break. [metro-zone-post-strip] Wales manager Giggs confirmed that Ramsey had been sent back to north London for further treatment on his thigh. ‘Aaron’s gone back to Arsenal. He won’t be available tomorrow,’ said Giggs. ‘His injury didn’t clear up in time so it’s obviously a blow. Especially with the form that he’s been on and with the quality that he’s got. He’s not made it but that gives someone else a chance. Ramsey has returned early from international duty (Picture: Getty) ‘He gave it a try yesterday and it just wasn’t settling down as quickly as we thought but it was just too short a turnaround really. ‘We made sure that we had a plan B and we’ve been working on that during the week. We had two options. ‘Of course you’re going to miss someone like Aaron but we prepared for if he didn’t make it as well.’ [metro-zone-post-strip] Gareth Bale admitted that Ramsey’s absence comes as a major blow to Wales ahead of the Euro 2020 qualifier with Slovakia. ‘Obviously it’s a big blow for us, he’s a big player for us and we’ll obviously miss him,’ Bale said. ‘But it gives someone else a chance to step in, do a good job and hopefully help the team to get a win.’ [metro-link url=”https://metro.co.uk/2019/03/23/raphael-varane-speaks-real-madrid-future-manchester-united-link-8994546/” title=”Raphael Varane speaks out on Real Madrid future after Manchester United link”]

AARON RAMSEY has been forced to pull out of the Wales squad for the start of their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign through injury. Arsenal star Ramsey missed the friendly against Trinidad and Tobago while he nursed a thigh problem in midweek but had hoped to be fit to face Slovakia tomorrow. Aaron Ramsey has been ruled out of the Wales Euro 2020 qualifier against Slovakia through injury But the influential midfielder has not recovered as quickly as expected and has now been sent back to Arsenal for treatment. It is a major blow for Wales boss Ryan Giggs as he looks to get his side’s European Championship qualifiers off to a strong start. Giggs said: “We hoped Aaron would make it but he has gone back to Arsenal. It’s a blow. “We have plan B and we’ve worked on it during the week. He was in good form but it gives a chance for someone else.” Wales have been handed a tough draw in Group E, with World Cup runners-up Croatia firm favourites to seal top spot. GUNNERS CONCERN It means the matches against Slovakia are likely to be crucial – so the absence of one of their star players is a huge loss for Wales. There will also be a concern at Arsenal about how serious the injury is, having initially only being described as “a knock”. The 28-year-old has played a key role in the upturn in form of Unai Emery’s side in recent weeks which has seen them climb back into the top four in the Premier League. [article-rail-topic title=”Latest Arsenal news” term_id=”880″ posts_number=”6″ /] The Gunners now have their sights set on catching Tottenham in third spot, although Manchester United and Chelsea are still fighting hard below them. Ramsey’s leadership and drive in midfield will be crucial to helping the Gunners, and Emery will want him fit to be available for the league clash with Newcastle on April 1. The fact that the game has been shifted to a Monday night is a bonus, giving him extra time to fully recover from the injury.
