C.J. West is the second high school football player to de-commit from the Gophers in the past week. West, a 6-foot-2, 305-pound defensive tackle from La Grange Park, Ill., announced his decision Tuesday on Twitter. He thanked Minnesota’s coaching staff for making his “experiences awesome,” but concluded he was re-opening his recruiting. West joins Winona defensive end Aaron Witt, who backed off from his commitment to Minnesota’s 2020 recruiting class last Thursday. Earlier this month, on May 13, Butler Community College linebacker Juwan Mitchell switched his commitment from Minnesota’s 2020 class to Texas’ 2019 class. RELATED: Gophers football adds four-star cornerback graduate transfer from Michigan Gophers coach P.J. Fleck addressed the recent de-commitments Tuesday during the Gophers’ Coaches Caravan’s first stop in Owatonna. He first pointed out that it is May and recruiting classes have a long way to go until the early signing period in December. He then referenced national numbers. Recruiting site 247sports.com lists 601 de-commits in the 2019 class; that’s 4.6 per program. “It’s just part of college football,” Fleck said. “Every team in the country goes through it. We’ve gone through it the last few years. We are getting more and more attention in recruiting. There is a lot more people coming after us in recruiting, which is a good thing. I think people should be really excited about what we are doing in recruiting because all eyes are coming to us. “But we are going to focus on the ones that do commit and the ones that really want to be Gophers from start to finish,” Fleck continued. “And those races aren’t done yet either. Then we will have some other people joining our team shortly as well.” Also, Kelvin Clemmons, a cornerback in the 2019 class who enrolled at Minnesota in January, announced on May 11 that he is transferring to Houston. “We’re gonna focus on the guys that want to be here,” Fleck said of Clemmons. “Do the right things, you’re going to love our program. Don’t do the right things, you’re not going to love our program. We want to continue to find the guys that want to be here.” MILESTONES The Gophers had their first summer conditioning session Monday, and Tuesday marked 100 days until the season opener on Aug. 29 against South Dakota State. [related_articles location=”right” show_article_date=”false” article_type=”automatic-primary-tag”] “We’re moving fast,” said Fleck, who led the Gophers to a 12-13 record in his first two season as head coach. Fleck said 14 or 15 scholarship players in the 2019 class will join the program in early June. BRIEFLY Wildcat quarterback Seth Green and defensive lineman Winston DeLattiboudere have recovered from their spring injuries, Fleck said. … The Gophers put redshirt senior punter Jacob Herbers on scholarship on Monday. The U’s video included former Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee and departed U specialists Peter Mortell, Ryan Santoso, Justin Juenemann, Emmit Carpenter and Payton Jordahl.
