Theresa May was humiliated and sent packing by the EU last night after they refused to save her Brexit deal as make-or-break negotiations with Brussels turned ‘ugly’.

The Prime Minister used a ten minute pitch during last night’s Brussels banquet to beg the bloc’s 27 leaders to agree an ‘end date’ to Brexit negotiations of late 2021 – so the contentious Irish backstop would never be triggered. 

She pleaded with them to ‘hold nothing in reserve’ in helping rescue her deal and said: ‘I hope I have shown you can trust me to do what is right, not always what is easy, however difficult that might be for me politically’.

But after the crunch talks ended Jean-Claude Juncker, wearing a green tie in solidarity with Ireland, called her demands ‘nebulous and imprecise’.
