I’ve managed a residential landscaping business for the past 6 years. The owner is a great guy and an even better boss. However, he had transitioned into early retirement right around the time that I started and isn’t as involved in the day to day operations which is why he brought me on board. I […]

It was back to work today and it was a fairly busy one; roaches, bed bugs, ants and rats … the literal gamut of just about every structural pest known to thrive in Southern Ontario.  Oh, and one remote TV controller was rescued from behind a really nasty, bugged out recliner chair. Good for me. […]

SPOILER ALERT: The following review contains mild spoilers for “Avengers: Endgame.” The culmination of 10 years and more than twice as many movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Avengers: Endgame” promises closure where its predecessor, “Avengers: Infinity War,” sowed chaos. That film — which revealed that the cookie-cutter uniformity of all those MCU movies had […]

There seem to have been more than a few people on the left pretty deeply disillusioned with the Prime Minister after she walked away from the possibility of a capital gains tax, not just now (when the parliamentary votes for it probably couldn’t be found) but at any future time while she is Labour leader. […]

Learning to cook has never been easier or more accessible. Thanks to YouTube cooking channels, a quick search can lead you to endless kitchen tutorials from how to bake classic French croissants to how to deep fry a turkey without burning your house down. We’re in the golden age of digital cooking content and it could not be a better time to throw the takeout menu away and get in the kitchen to cook dinner.   Beware though, it’s easy to go down a YouTube rabbit hole and completely lose track of time — there’s a lot of content to sift through.  One minute you’re searching easy one-pot dinners with your apron on and the next thing you know it’s 10 p.m., there’s no dinner in sight and you’re watching your tenth tiny kitchen video. To avoid falling prey to the endless abyss of cooking videos, we’ve narrowed down the best, most helpful cooking classes on YouTube.  Whether you’re looking to brush up on your knife skills or you just need to pump the breaks on your Seamless addiction, these videos will help you channel your inner Ina and teach you how to slice, dice and saute with the ease of a seasoned home cook. 1. Bon Appétit’s Baking School If you’re not already obsessed with Claire Saffitz from Bon Appétit, get ready to become a super fan. Known best for her video series Gourmet Makes where she recreates gourmet versions of beloved snack foods (think Oreos, Twinkies, Gushers, Pringles), Claire takes on baking basics in this new video series. In lesson one, she reveals her secrets for baking light and airy cake layers using three unique methods and explains how gluten works. 2. Serious Eats  From how to break down a chicken to how to care for your copper pots and pans, Serious Eats has you covered. They offer tutorials on a wide range of topics and often feature classes from famous food bloggers.   3. Simply Quinoa Did you know you can make pizza out of quinoa? Did you know that you can make quinoa pizza that actually tastes good? We didn’t believe it either until we started trying some of the genius recipes from Simply Quinoa. All of the recipes developed by the channel’s creator, Alyssa Rimmer feature quinoa and they taste so delicious, your kids won’t even realize they’re healthy. 4. Martha Stewart’s Cooking School Basically, there’s nothing Martha Stewart can’t do. She shares all sorts of gardening and decorating videos on her YouTube channel but her Cooking School series is our favorite. She covers all the basics so you can get the tough stuff down and then experiment with more creative recipes.   5. Binging with Babish Andrew Rea, the host of Binging with Babish, is known for his super popular basics-focused cooking show that reinforces the foundations of cooking so you can feel more confident in the kitchen.  In this video, he teaches us how to make Julia Child’s classic French beef bourguignon.  6. Donal Skehan Donal Skehan’s light-hearted demeanor and approachable recipes will inspire you to get cooking. He releases a new video every Sunday and he cooks meals that are out-of-the-box and great if you need something quick and easy to jazz up your dinner routine. Plus, he’s a sheer joy to watch. In this video, Donal makes a simple one-pot pasta dish featuring an irresistibly silky tomato sauce.  7. Phoebe Lapine Everyone’s favorite cookbook author, chef and creator of Feed Me Phoebe, Phoebe Lapine now has her own YouTube cooking channel and the recipes are to die for. Lapine always finds a way to turn healthy, gluten-free dishes into mouth-watering, Instagram-worthy meals. 8.  Inspiralized Raise a hand if you bought a spiralizer years ago and it’s still sitting in your pantry, unopened and unused. It’s OK, that was us too — until we started watching the videos on Alissandra Maffucci’s Inspiralized channel. Now, we’re basically spiralizer addicts. This channel is especially great if you are a fan of the new keto diet trend and are looking to reduce your carb intake. 9. Tasty Sure, Tasty features a wide variety of fun recipes packaged in cute little videos, but they also take a deeper dive into food topics like what it’s really like to go vegan and how to reduce waste while you cook. Alissandra Maffucci, Phoebe Lapine and Alyssa Rimmer will be speaking at SHE Media’s #BlogHer Food conference on May 8, 2019, in Brooklyn, NY. Book your tickets now so you don’t miss out on lots of food tips and tricks from these amazing women!
