BIGGS — Save for the occasional distraction during the past few days, the Northern Section championship game is all the Biggs girls basketball team can think about. Since the Wolverines (25-1) defeated Portola 51-40 at home Tuesday, earning them a spot in Friday’s Division V championship game against Trinity, they’ve spent the rest of the week preparing for the game on a stage they haven’t played in since 2005. Since that section championship game 14 years ago, a 49-21 loss to Hayfork, in which current head coach Tim Sheridan was in his second year running the team, Biggs has had a number of good teams over the years. But the Wolverines have been unable to get back there until now. This year’s team, led by seniors Megan Collins, Molly Roles, Madison Roles, Ciera Van Quick, Emonye Jones, Karsyn McLean and Morgan Matey, has grown up together and now has its sights set on the school’s first-ever section basketball championship. “The difference between this year and the other years I’ve played is, the team is a lot more mature now,” Collins said. “Me and Emonye both came up as freshmen — we were babies. Now we’re grown, and we’re there mentally and physically … We’ve had growing to do, and now we’re ready.” Jones returned to the Biggs basketball team this year after stepping away from the sport as a sophomore and junior. She’s averaged 11.6 points, second only to Collins’ 17.6 per game average, and leads the team with 9.1 rebounds. “I’ve always had love for the game, and I felt like that break made me realize it, because I missed it,” Jones said. “I realized that I love basketball, so I came back and I’m loving it still.” To go through the regular season with only one loss, even the best teams need a little luck, or a bounce to fall their way. For the Wolverines, that moment came in their fourth game of the season, Dec. 1, at their home tournament against Portola. Biggs trailed late in the fourth quarter, and faced a four-point deficit with under 10 seconds remaining. Collins banked in a 3-pointer to bring Biggs within one. After Portola turned the ball over on the ensuing inbounds play, Biggs had 1.2 seconds to get a shot off. Jones received a pass from Van Quick, spun around and fired a 3-pointer that kissed off the glass and in. “(It) just really showed us that anything is possible,” Collins said. “Everyone thought that game was over.” The Wolverines’ eyes were wide open after nearly suffering an early-season defeat. They have since won 21 of 22 games over nearly three months. “It opened our eyes, definitely, because ever since that day I always say, ‘Anything is possible,'” Jones said. “Ever since that day when we think we’re going to lose, I’m like, ‘Hey guys, remember when we won that game?’ … Even if we’re down, we can always catch back up no matter what the time says.” That mindset helped them in playoff wins over Mt. Shasta, 46-42, and most recently, Tuesday against Portola. The Wolverines expect a similar fight from No. 7 seed Trinity (15-15), which upset Hamilton and Modoc to reach the championship. Trinity’s head coach, Jim Bayley, coached at Hayfork in 2004 when the team met Biggs in the section championship. Sheridan watched Trinity beat Hamilton in the first round, and said it was reminiscent of the Hayfork team Biggs faced 14 years ago. “I know his game and it’s hard to beat,” Sheridan said. “It’s just creating skilled passers and hard-working defenders.” At Butte College, tipoff between Biggs and Trinity will be at 6 p.m. Friday. Earlier in the day, Willows will play Lassen at 2:30 p.m. Pleasant Valley, though eliminated from the section playoffs in the semifinals, earned a spot in the NorCal playoffs after a Division V team dropped out Wednesday. Regardless of Friday’s results, all three teams will await to find out where they are seeded for the NorCal playoffs when the CIF releases brackets on Sunday. Willows goes for back-to-back titles Willows (21-5) grinded out a 51-48 win over West Valley on Tuesday to reach the Division IV championship. The Honkers will face No. 2 seed Lassen (22-6), a team they have yet to see this year. As the top seed, Willows is looking for its second straight section championship after it hung on to beat Oroville 35-34 last year. “It’d be really cool to win back-to-back,” said junior Meghan Weinrich, who leads the team averaging 23.8 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. “We just have to keep playing good defense and playing like a team like we did (Tuesday).” Willows has won 10 straight, including an undefeated Sacramento Valley League tilt, dating back to Jan. 11. “It’s been about hard work, perseverance and dedication to the sport,” head coach Carol Martin said. “They really bought into a program that’s good and that has a winning tradition. On the night when the full moon was supposed to be invoking the ancestors (this is astrologically), I found myself drawing all my grandmother’s thimbles going back four generations. My mother gifted them to me, so though she doesn’t have her own, she too is represented on those pages. To Whom will I gift them? […]
