Earnest Reflections of a Christian with Cancer

It was 2010 and my situation was as comfortable as it could be and I was feeling myself again spending time with God-minded friends. I was also working back at my old company I started at as a teenager as a deli clerk. I wasn’t happy about my job choice and felt like I was going backwards […]

An argument between two city politicians played out for a second time Tuesday afternoon as Coun. Paul Van Meerbergen took another swing at the tracking of diversity statistics at city hall, insisting the numbers are a “slippery slope.” He first raised the issue in January, saying the breakdown of city hall’s workforce suggests hiring isn’t […]

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – Under current federal regulations, schools can offer students only unflavored skim or 1% milk for lunch, but a bill in the Pennsylvania Legislature would change that. “When the guidelines pushed to go to skim milk, what we’re finding is school children may like whole milk at home but they go to school and have skim milk and they don’t like the taste, so they’re not drinking the milk in school,” said Dave Smith, executive director of the Pennsylvania Dairymen’s Association.  U.S. Rep. Glenn “G.T.” Thompson is sponsoring the Whole Milk For Healthy Kids bill. He says when whole milk was taken out of schools, milk consumption in schools went down dramatically in the first year and continued to decline for nine years.  “Milk sales went down and as a result. We also saw a decline in rural economy over the past six years,” Thompson said. Stacey Copenhaver owns a dairy farm in Lebanon County and has witnessed first hand limiting milk choices.  “We’re kind of missing and losing a generation of milk drinkers because they aren’t offered the best, most delicious milk product,” Thompson said. A second bill, the Dairy Pride Act, is sponsored by U.S. Rep. John Joyce and would prohibit milk alternatives such as almond milk or cashew milk from being labeled as milk.

Hermosa Beach’s finances are healthy and one of the city’s top priorities in the years to come is further improving public safety, Mayor Stacey Armato said during her recent State of the City address. The mayor’s annual address was wide-ranging, discussing the city’s efforts to make the downtown business district safer, various developments that have either been completed or are in the works, and the ways in which an engaged public can help shape the direction of the beach city. “All of us in Hermosa can celebrate some significant accomplishments over the past year and we can celebrate a strong future for Hermosa,” Armato said. “Our city is on solid financial footing and it’s as well positioned as it has ever been in recent history to tackle some of the challenges that lie ahead.” [related_articles location=”left” show_article_date=”false” article_type=”automatic-primary-tag”] Among those challenges, Armato said, is ensuring the public is safe — particularly in economic centers. “We are working,” the mayor said, “on creating a safer, cleaner and more desirable downtown business district with improved lighting, security, cleaning services, parking and signage.” Acting police chief Milton McKinnon also spoke at the State of the City Address last week, noting that Hermosa Beach uses private security to as a second set of “eyes and ears,” and has worked with community groups to help those who are homeless — about 25 folks, according to this year’s L.A. County survey of those on the streets. “You have to build up a relationship, you have to connect with these people because often times they’re scared, often times they don’t trust,” McKinnon said. “They don’t necessarily want to interact with our officers.” Armato, meanwhile, also spoke about  the Greenbelt Infiltration Project, a multi-city effort to treat stormwater that runs from the Herondo Drain and into the Santa Monica Bay. Residents largely opposed the project’s location, leading the Hermosa Beach City Council to look for a new location — costing the city more than $3 million in grant funding. The city will reapply for more grant funding for the project later this summer or in the early fall. “We heard you on this project,” Armato said. “You helped us to realize that it wasn’t appropriate for where it was proposed. Because of you, we’re moving forward to reassess and re-imagine this project.” As for the city’s development projects, Armato said, a number have already been completed, including the Hermosa Avenue Improvement Project and safety upgrades to the Community Center. Improvements to police and city facilities might be completed in the fall, Armato said, while a new fire facility is looking at an early 2020 completion date. The city is also waiting completion of an environmental impact report on the Strand and Pier Hotel.
