Star Trek: Picard

One of my favorite Star Trek Next Generation episodes is “The Inner Light” where Captain Picard lives a new life on the extinct planet, Kataan, that died 1000 years ago. He experiences decades of a life on that planet in less than 25 minutes while he’s in a coma. Escaping to a completely new life […]

I may not be the geekiest person you’ve ever met, but I do have a bat’leth on my wall and an all-female ‘Feminist Funko’ collection that has grown so big, I’ve had to twice craft new displays to show it off. It’s fair to say I’ve got at least some geek cred. But I obviously […]

Love Island applicants undergo BMI tests (Picture: ITV)Love Island hopefuls have to take BMI and drugs tests as part of the application process. ITV Chief Executive Carolyn McCall said the show ensures all contestants are ‘fit and healthy’. Contestants are also tested for steroids with McCall saying the show has ‘no tolerance’ for drugs. Appearing before the Digital, Culture, Media and Sports Committee on Tuesday, McCall was asked about the ‘diversity’ of its line-up. ‘On Love Island, the people tend to be young and healthy,’ she explained. ‘We do do a BMI test, and if you look at the series now they’re not all the same shape. They are different. There are variations of shape. They are all fit, healthy, young and it’s a dating show. ‘There’s a rigorous casting process. We get about 98,000 applications, they take that down to 90 or 100. They then go through medical assessments which goes down to 30 to 40. McCall said the contestants are ‘fit, healthy and young’ (Picture: ITV)‘It’s a rigourous process of screening. It’s four years old now. They all go through testing, they’re tested for drugs, steroids, we have no tolerance for any type of drug. ‘We make it clear in our process that the team continuously look for people who would be right for love island. They go to festivals, agencies, a whole range of places. But they would still go through the screening process.’ [metro-fact-box title=”What is BMI?” colour=”blue” icon=”exclamation”] Your BMI is your body mass index, a measurement that uses your height and weight to determine if your weight is healthy. According to the NHS, an ideal BMI for most adults is from 18.5 to 24.9. [/metro-fact-box] She also shut down the suggestion that contestants from a BAME background are shown on screen less than white contestants. [metro-video id=”1952898″] Using this year’s stars Yewande Biala, Danny Williams, Michael Griffiths and Amber Gill as examples, she told the committee: ‘I don’t see the evidence for that and if there was we would take that very seriously. ‘Yewande and Danny had an enormous amount of air time as a result of what was going on with them. Michael and Amber are one of the most popular couples.’ Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2. Marina Sirtis has expressed an interest in returning to Star Trek (Picture: Rex) Stat Trek: The Next Generation star Marina Sirtis has expressed an interest in wanting a cameo in the forthcoming Picard series while explicitly ruling out starring in Quentin Tarantino’s remake. The actress, who played half-human half-Betazoid Deanna Troi in the franchise, is thrilled that Patrick Stewart is reprising his character Jean-Luc Picard after 18-years off our screens and can’t wait to see him back in action. ‘I’m excited,’ Marina enthused to Digital Spy. ‘I’m excited to see Patrick as Picard again because I think he was bloody brilliant in that character.’ Revealing that she’d jump at the opportunity to rejoin Starfleet, she added: ‘If they ask me, I would love to be in it. But I have to be honest, the phone hasn’t rung yet, so I’m not holding my breath. ‘But I’d love to do it – as long as I don’t have to wear that spacesuit again, because I’ve put on a bit of weight since then, and I don’t fancy going to the fat farm to lose it all again!’ [metro-video id=”1931360″ video=”https://videos.metro.co.uk/video/met/2019/05/23/1734350361791541972/1024x576_MP4_1734350361791541972.mp4” image=”https://i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2019/05/23/16/13867838-0-image-a-23_1558625181411.jpg“] Marina (middle right) played Deanna Troi in Star Trek’s next generation alongside LeVar Burton, Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, Whoopi Goldberg, Gates McFadden, Michael Dorn and Wil Wheaton (as Wesley Crusher). (Picture: CBS) Earlier this month, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood director Quentin revealed he’s keen to get his hands on a Star Trek script and make a profanity-laden film. ‘There’s a script that exists for it now,’ he admitted to Empire at the time. ‘I need to weigh in on it, but I haven’t been able to do that yet.’ Marina doesn’t want to work with Quentin Tarantino (Picture: Wire Image) [metro-tag-post-strip] Marina has zero interest in putting her name forward for the movie if it happens though. ‘No! I’m not a big fan, so I would not like that at all,’ she added to Digital Spy. I’m just going to leave it at that, and let you fill in the gaps.’ Star Trek: Picard is set to arrive on CBS All Access in the US in 2019 and Amazon Prime Video in the UK. As time has gone on, I’ve enjoyed this film more and more. I’ll never love it (it’s far too flawed for that level of appreciation), but there are depths to this films thematic material that really only grow with repeat viewings. As implied, the movie’s far from perfect. Data’s story is very much a B-story […]

Nothing will ever be the same again. Donald Trump’s unwavering disregard for reality and his acts of violence against the truth are rapidly metastasizing into the marrow of the national debate. I’m not sure we have enough heroes in this country to successfully extricate Trumpism and toss it into the biohazard waste bin of history, […]

The Jolly Cynic

The power of The Inner Light is that it shows just how easily we all could be drawn into life and made to believe it is real, only to discover at its end, it was all a play.

Inside the Mind of Stitch Mainville

The First Amendment of the United States Constitution protects everyone’s right to freedom of religion and freedom of expression from government interference. It prohibits any laws that establish a national religion, impede the free exercise of religion, abridge the freedom of speech, infringe upon the freedom of the press, interfere with the right to peaceably assemble, or prohibit citizens from petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances. However, there are social media outlets that are actually banning people for using language that they deem as “hateful” or “hurtful” to others. Those social media outlets will even block or delete accounts that “they deem” as hateful speech; despite the fact that the Constitution affords us the freedom of speech.

I hate everything about Star Trek Discovery except for the cast and I actually think they’re solid. I’ve watched the entire first two seasons and I really don’t think I’ll ever be able to watch them again, it was so miserable. It was like fan fiction but not good fan fiction. There were a billion […]
