The 2018 NFL season has boiled down to three games that we really could have predicted we’d get back in Week 9. That was when the Saints won 45-35 at home against the Rams, just a few weeks after the Patriots beat the Chiefs 43-40. They were two of the most entertaining games this season, […]

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — When the Patriots drafted Sony Michel in the first round, they likely envisioned the exact scenario that played out last weekend. The Pats smashed the Chargers at the line of scrimmage. Tom Brady handed off 24 times to Michel, who piled up 129 yards on the ground and scored three touchdowns. As Brady ages, even if he continues at a high level of play, a consistent running game becomes vital. [related_articles location=”left” show_article_date=”false” article_type=”curated” curated_ids=”1468310,1468667,1468893″] Michel’s combination of vision, burst, and physicality has rapidly turned him into one of the Patriots’ most critical offensive players, and he’ll likely be counted on in the AFC Championship at Kansas City. Michel feels ready for the biggest game of his young career. “It’s like taking a test,” Michel said Friday. “If you walk into the class and you’re prepared for it, you’re going to ace it. If you walk in not prepared, now you’re nervous and you feel like you’re going to fail…It’s all about what I did this week, and I’m ready.” Michel, who grew up in Hollywood, Fla., and played his college ball at Georgia, had little experience in cold weather games prior to entering the NFL. He hasn’t experienced issues keeping his muscles warm and loose in frigid conditions, though. “It’s going to be cold,” Michel said. “You’re going to be a cold winner or a cold loser. Either way you’re going to be cold.” Michel has taken his game to new levels as the temperatures dip. He dominated Buffalo in Week 16, totaling 116 yards and averaging 6.4 per attempt. And last weekend’s divisional round rout of the Chargers was arguably the best game of Michel’s rookie season. Asked about his vision and instincts in that game, Michel said, “I kind of just follow my rules. As running backs we have certain rules, certain things we’ve got to be looking at and that’s kind of stuff that I just focus on and I guess it happens for me.” The Chiefs were the second-worst run defense in the league, allowing five yards per carry to opponents. CHIEFS X-FACTOR The Chiefs have scored 82 points in their past two games against the Patriots, largely thanks to a handful of enormous plays through the air. Tyreek Hill has burned the Pats, but they’ve also been torched by running backs going vertical out of the backfield. In the 2017 season opener, the Chiefs got Kareem Hunt isolated on Patriots linebacker Cassius Marsh and sent him deep. Free safety Duron Harmon came crashing down to pick up Hill in the flat, leaving the deep middle of the field unoccupied. Alex Smith hit Hunt in stride 30 yards from the line of scrimmage and the rookie running back outraced the Patriots defense for a 78-yard touchdown. In the Week 6 game this season, Hunt sprinted to the flat and carried his route upfield against Jason McCourty. Free safety Devin McCourty, who was initially playing in a two-deep look, came down to double Hill. This left no one behind Jason McCourty, and it resulted in a 67-yard touchdown to Hunt. Earlier in the game, the Chiefs should have had a 26-yard touchdown when Hunt ran past Dont’a Hightower down the middle of the field, but Patrick Mahomes missed the throw. On Friday, Bill Belichick said the vertical element out of the backfield remains part of the Chiefs offense. “You bet,” Belichick said. “They do it with everybody.” Damien Williams hasn’t yet been targeted on a route more than 10 yards downfield, though. Spencer Ware, who hasn’t played since Week 14 due to a hamstring injury, was targeted once on a “deep” route this season: A 22-yard completion down the middle against the Bengals. And a review of Hunt’s targets this season showed similar results. The Chiefs didn’t target Hunt deep downfield…unless they were playing the Patriots. An incredible 24 percent of Hunt’s career receiving yards came in two games versus the Pats. It’s possible that the Chiefs’ success with those plays against the Patriots is purely coincidental. It’s also possible that the Chiefs are exploiting a specific weakness in the New England defense. WEATHER IMPACT? Current forecasts call for temperatures in the high 20s at kickoff. There’s a 5 percent chance of precipitation. How much will the cold weather affect the offensive potential of the matchup? If recent history is any indication, it probably won’t have much of an impact. In the past decade, there have been 174 games played in freezing temperatures, according to Pro Football Reference. The median combined score in those games was 44 points. There have been plenty of shootouts in freezing temperatures, including last year’s 45-42 Jaguars-Steelers divisional round game. Since 2012, the Patriots average 29.2 points per game in games played below 32 degrees. ARROWHEAD HISTORY Playing at Arrowhead Stadium is a tall task for anyone, including the NFL’s most consistent franchise. With Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, the Patriots are 1-2 on the road against the Chiefs. Brady averaged 241 passing yards and threw three touchdowns and six interceptions in those games.
